Ex-French President Jacques Chirac hospitalized with lung infection

Former French President Jacques Chirac was rushed to a hospital with a lung infection, a family member said Sunday.

Chirac, who was France's president from 1995-2007, was expected to "remain in hospital for the next few days," Frédéric Salat-Baroux, his son-in-law, said.

Chirac, 83, was vacationing in Morocco when he was stricken. He and those in his party were flown back to Paris in two jets provided by the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI.

Chirac's family said he was conscious at Pitie-Salpetriere hospital.

The former center-right president has had medical problems before.

Last December he spent two weeks in a hospital with "fatigue," his family said.

In 2011, because he was in deteriorating health, prosecutors didn't try him in court for corruption. Instead, he was convicted and given a two-year suspended sentence for colluding in the creation of fake jobs for party workers while mayor in Paris.

In 2002, he survived an assassination attempt. A neo-Nazi gunman fired a rifle at his open-top car during the the Bastille Day parade.
