German Right-Wing Party Wants to Arm Citizens Amid Security Concerns

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party wants the government to relax gun laws to allow citizens to protect their lives amid rising security concerns, its chairwoman told local media Saturday.

The government has been making moves to end illegal arms sales amid reports that the Munich gunman, who killed nine people at the shopping mall last month, had bought a pistol and ammo via such website.

"Many citizens feel less and less safe. Every law-abiding citizen must be able to defend themselves, their family and friends," AfD’s Frauke Petry told the German newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung.

Petry accused the government of making devastating cuts to police funding and jobs, which increased their response times and left people vulnerable.

At the same time the federal authorities have been tearing down border controls, she said, leading to an upsurge in cross-border criminality.

"The AfD is the only party in Germany that opposes stricter gun laws. This will hit honest citizens and not those who buy guns on darknet."

The darknet refers to Internet websites where people can exchange currency anonymously. This makes these networks more appealing to criminals, including drug and gun traffickers.
