At least 39 dead and thousands affected after Earl storm in Mexico

The heavy downpour triggered by tropical storm Earl this weekend has killed at least 39 people and affected thousands more in the states of Veracruz, Puebla and Hidalgo.

Earl, which reached the level of hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale when it passed the Atlantic Ocean, dissipated its strength around Mexican territory, although it still wreaked havoc on several states.

With 28 people dead, the central state of Puebla has been the most affected by torrential rains provoked by Earl, a tropical storm that hit the region Saturday night.

Heavy rain caused the collapse of several hills on Sunday at dawn and buried homes in the municipalities of Huauchinango and Tlaola in the mountainous region of Puebla.

While the last official statement from the government of Puebla does not address missing people, the area where the heavy rains fell is very difficult to access, thus the death toll may rise.

Although the number of those affected is unknown in the state of Puebla, the Interior Ministry today declared a state of emergency for the affected municipalities and activated the Natural Disasters Fund (FONDEN).

In the eastern state of Veracruz, struck by Earl Friday and Saturday, the death toll has reached 10, all of them by landslides.

The Civil Protection of the State of Veracruz today informed in a bulletin that the storm has affected 10,600 people, 2,141 homes and 18 isolated communities.

In addition to the 28 killed in Puebla and 10 in Veracruz, a young man died after being buried underground in the central state of Hidalgo where it rained heavily.
