1 soldier killed, 9 injured in eastern Ukraine

A Ukrainian soldier was killed and nine others were wounded in recent clashes with separatist militias in eastern Ukraine, a presidential spokesperson said Tuesday.

Col. Andriy Lysenko, a military spokesman for the Ukrainian presidency, announced the casualties during a Kiev press briefing.

"Over the past day, a Ukranian soldier has died and nine others have sustained injuries in combat action," Lysenko told the press.

He explained that the soldier's death occurred in the Crimean town of Pavlopol, in the disputed Donetsk region, when separatist fighters opened artillery fire on government forces.

Lysenko added that the militias fired over 250 artillery shells during their attack on Ukrainian troops.

According to the military spokesman, the pro-Russian rebels, who were operating near the city of Mariupol, used a BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher, a weapon that was banned in the Feb. 2015 Minsk Accords.

Skirmishes near the Russian border have intensified in the past few days coinciding with heightened diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had recently stated he did not rule out the possibility of Russia starting an open war against Ukraine.

"The probability of escalation of the conflict remains very significant," said Poroshenko.

"We do not rule out a full-scale Russian invasion. Our Armed Forces are prepared to face the enemy in the East and along the administrative border with Crimea," he added.

Russia, who has accused Ukraine of planning a series of terrorist attacks on the Crimean Peninsula (a territory annexed by Moscow in March 2014), last week initiated large-scale military drills near the Ukrainian border.
