Ukraine at UN says Putin's Crimea decree 'null and void'. Kiev said about the possibility of imposing sanctions

Ukraine's UN ambassador on Thursday dismissed as "null and void" a decree by President Vladimir Putin incorporating annexed Crimea into the southern region of Russia.

Volodymyr Yelchenko said he will ask the Security Council to issue a statement reaffirming Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the decree, even though he fully expects Russia to block it.

"The decision is null and void as any other decision taken by Crimea so far," Yelchenko told reporters, adding that there was "indignation" in Kiev over the move.

  • The proposed statement would refer to a UN General Assembly resolution that rejected Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya said that the West could extend sanctions against the Crimea on the southern Federal district (SFD), in which the Peninsula was included. On Thursday, July 28, according to UNIAN news Agency.

“It may happen that the sanctions that act directly on the territory of Crimea, serious partners, international organizations and countries can be extended to the same southern Federal district,” — said the diplomat.

Before that Director of policy and communications Ministry of Ukraine Alexei Makeyev said that the foreign Ministry expressed protest over the inclusion of Crimea in the southern Federal district of Russia.
