François Hollande: France to send artillery, deploy aircraft carrier to combat ISIS/ISIL

France is to send artillery to the Iraqi army and deploy an aircraft carrier to the region to intensify the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in light of the Nice terror attack, the French president said Friday.

Francois Hollande spoke after a meeting with defense and security officials regarding the July 14 truck attack that left 84 people dead and over 300 injured.

"We will support our allies in Syria and Iraq, but we won't put boots on the ground", Hollande said, as he explained increased French participation in the international coalition against the IS.

France will supply the Iraqi army with artillery next month to assist in the fight against IS, but will not send ground troops.

The aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle," which has already participated in various missions in the region, will return to boost airstrikes towards the end of September, the president said.

Out of those injured in Nice, 12 remain in critical condition, Hollande said, adding that the victims were made up of 18 nationalities.

The suspect, who drove a truck along the "Promenade des Anglais" into the crowds gathered to watch the Bastille Day fireworks display, had apparently been inspired by the Islamic State (IS), who went on to claim responsibility for the attack.

The president warned that the terror threat is going to last and does not affect only France.

A series of measures have been taken in France to increase vigilance, including putting an additional 10,000 soldiers on patrol and ensuring patrols at cultural events and tourist areas.

At the end of July, 15,000 reserves from the gendarmerie, national police and army are to be mobilized, Hollande said.
