Militant attacks on oil and gas installations in northern Iraq on Sunday have left a death toll of at least nine people killed, security sources told EFE.
At least four workers linked to Iraq's North Oil Company were killed when armed militants stormed a gas installation some 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of the city of Kirkuk, sources said.
The attackers placed explosive devices and fled before security forces encircled the area and launched a large man-hunt in a bid to capture the armed group, Kirkuk security sources said.
Later, five suicide attackers were killed at an oil field at Bai Hassan, about 20 kilometers northwest of Kirkuk.
Kurdish Peshmerga sources said dozens could have been injured in the attacks.
The province of Kirkuk is known for its oil-rich reserves.
One of the bombers died immediately in a clash with security forces, while the other four were killed after they had succeeded in causing two oil reservoirs to explode and catch fire.
There was no information available on possible casualties among workers at the oil field.
Police surrounded the area in an attempt to round up any other persons who might have been involved in the attack.
Neither attack was claimed by any organization, although the militant Islamic State group has perpetrated similar attacks in the past.
IS stormed into northern Iraq in mid-2014 and since then has a strong presence in the area and dominates the city of Mosul, the main terrorist stronghold in the country.
However, in recent months it has lost ground due to offensives launched by Iraqi forces in this and other areas of the country.
