Turkish court seeks two life and 486-year prison sentence for Kurdish leader Demirtaş

Judicial process has been started against HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) officials soon after the lifting of parliamentary immunities upon an instruction of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

A file of “criminal records” against a group of HDP deputies and HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş has been sent to Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office already as part of Turkish state’s efforts to strip HDP’s elected representatives of their immunities.

With the beginning of the judicial process, eyes have been turned on the attitude to be adopted by HDP deputies against whom a total of 510 summaries of proceedings have been launched recently, 93 of which target Demirtaş alone. In addition, Two times life prison and 486-year prison sentence is sought for the HDP co—chair.

In response to the “coup” proposal that was introduced by the AKP and approved by the CHP and MHP on the basis of an anti-Kurdish alliance, Demirtaş stated late May that; “None of our colleagues will accept the request of prosecutors and courts to testify. Nobody should expect us to accept this coup which imposes an open dictatorship. Today, two and a half parties came together and approved this coup.”
