Libyan troops captured Sirte, a stronghold of ISIS/ISIL

Armed forces, subordinate to the government of Libya, announced that it has captured the port, and several areas of Sirte, the city became a stronghold of the local branch of the terrorist organization «Islamic state».

The operation was conducted by troops of the so-called national consensus government (NTC), which supports the UN, but which are not subject to army General Khalifa the Haftarot.

Sources in the units involved in the battle for Sirte, reported that after artillery preparation and bombing began a fierce battle in the streets of the city. ISIS uses suicide bombers, car bombs, snipers and many different traps, providing a stubborn resistance.

Exact data on losses of both sides are unknown. Government forces reported only two killed and eight wounded.

Sirte, the hometown of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, became the stronghold of the IG in June 2015, a year ago.
