  2. Australians Prepare to Vote, Focus on Economy ...

Australians are gearing up to hit the polls in a close federal election Saturday where the country will decide whether minor parties will overthrow the incumbent government.

While climate change, immigration and education are key issues, it is the economy that is likely to decide who wins. Australia has avoided recession for 25 years, but the future is unclear as a resources boom fueled by China’s appetite for iron ore and coal continues to fade.

In Sydney, cranes dominate the skyline as a swathe of new apartment blocks emerge alongside upgraded transport links. As a long mining boom comes to an end, Australia is banking on a reinvigorated construction industry, along with manufacturing, tourism and agriculture.

But Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has created great anxiety here, and Australian political leaders have put economic security at the heart of their election campaigns.

  3. Greek MPs ratify deal for sale of majority stake in Piraeus port to China's COSCO ...

Greek lawmakers ratified on Thursday with an overwhelming majority the landmark concession agreement with China's COSCO Shipping for the acquisition of a majority stake in Piraeus Port Authority (PPA or OLP in Greek).

During a roll call held in the plenum, 223 MPs of the ruling coalition as well as opposition parties voted in favor of the bill on the approval of the sale, while 25 legislators voted against.

A total of 248 legislators participated in voting which was broadcast live on the parliament's channel and 52 MPs were absent.

The ratification of the contract for the privatization of Greece's largest port came a few hours ahead of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' first official visit to China.

The Greek leader is scheduled to travel to Beijing on Friday, heading a large delegation of officials and businessmen, aiming to further develop bilateral ties.

The changing of hands at Piraeus port under the deal approved on Thursday has been hailed by both sides and international experts as a milestone in the friendly Sino- Greek relations which will benefit Greece, China and the world.

After the Greek parliament's green light, under the agreement sealed in April this year, COSCO will pay to Greece's privatization fund, the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), 280.5 million euros (311.52 million U.S dollars) for the 51 percent of shares in PPA and the management of the port.....http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/991759.shtml

  4. Taiwan mistakenly fires `carrier killer` missile towards China...

"A Taiwanese warship mistakenly launched a supersonic "aircraft carrier killer" missile towards China on Friday", the navy said, as ties between the island and its once bitter rival deteriorate.

The domestically developed Hsiung-feng III (Brave Wind) missile, with a range of 300 kilometres (around 200 miles), flew about 75 kilometres before plunging into waters off Penghu, a Taiwanese-administered island group in the Taiwan Strait.

The navy said that it was not immediately clear how the missile had come to be launched, but suggested it could have been due to human error.

"Our initial investigation found that the operation was not done in accordance with normal procedure," Vice Admiral Mei Chia-shu told reporters, adding that an investigation was under way.

The missile was fired during a drill at around 8:10 am (0010 GMT) from a 500-tonne missile ship docked at a naval base in the southern city of Tsoying and flew in the direction of China.....india.com/AFP

  5. Court overturns Austria presidential poll result. The election will now be re-run...

Austria's highest court has annulled last month's presidential election narrowly lost by the right-wing candidate of the Freedom Party.

The party had challenged the result, saying that postal votes had been improperly handled.

The Freedom Party candidate, Norbert Hofer, lost the election to the former leader of the Greens, Alexander Van der Bellen, by less than a percentage point.

The election will now be re-run.

  8. Czech President Milos Zeman has called for a referendum on exiting the European Union and NATO, only a week after Britain voted to leave the EU, public radio said Friday...

Zeman insisted he himself would vote against leaving when he spoke with voters in a small Czech town on Thursday, Czech Radio said on its website.

"I disagree with those who are in favour of leaving the EU," the 71-year-old outspoken leftist said.

"But I'll do my best to have a referendum so they can express themselves. The same goes for a NATO exit."

Forty-nine percent of Czechs support staying in the EU, while 34 percent are in favour of leaving, according to a June poll by the Median agency.

The Czech Republic, which joined the NATO Western defence alliance in 1999 and the EU in 2004, does not have a referendum law.

But in March, parliament began debating a referendum bill that would need backing from 120 of 200 lawmakers to pass.

The bill would give the green light to referendum proposals backed by at least 250,000 signatures in the country of 10.5 million people.

However it would not allow voters to decide on issues -- such as an EU exit -- that would lead the country to breach international obligations.

  12. A muezzin's call to prayer reverberated inside the 6th century Istanbul landmark Hagia Sophia for the first time in 85 years on July 1...

The building in the city's historic Sultanahmet district broadcast the azan from its minarets following July 1's Laylat al-Qadr, or night of power, marking the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.

The broadcast of the morning call to prayer from within Hagia Sophia is likely to reignite the controversy over the use of the building, which was designated a museum in 1935 under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkisjh Republic.

Although the prayer call has been played from Hagia Sophia's minarets for the last four years, the muezzin has always chanted from a prayer room in the museum grounds rather than from inside the former mosque and cathedral.

A Russian warship carried out aggressive and erratic maneuvers close to a U.S. Navy ship in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, the second such Cold War-style incident there in a matter of weeks, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The U.S. European Command said the Russian frigate, Yaroslav Mudry, came unnecessarily close to the guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto on June 30 and maneuvered in its wake.

With the results of Australia's stunningly close national election potentially weeks away, Australia's prime minister and opposition leader were expected to spend Monday trying to drum up support from minor parties in desperate bids to form a working government.

The country was facing the prospect of a dreaded hung parliament after Saturday's elections, which failed to deliver an immediate victor. 22. Islamist "rebels" and "militants" in Syria are guilty of war crimes, Amnesty International said in a report on Tuesday, accusing them of “a chilling wave of abductions, torture and summary killings.”...

The London-based rights group named five Syrian anti-regime factions operating in northern Syria: Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, hardliner Ahrar al-Sham, Nureddin Zinki, the Levant Front and Division 16.

The groups have detained and tortured lawyers, journalists, and children - among others - for criticizing them, committing acts seen as immoral, or being minorities, the report said.

“Many civilians live in constant fear of being abducted if they criticize the conduct of armed groups in power or fail to abide by the strict rules that some have imposed,” said Philip Luther, head of Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa program.

“In Aleppo and Idlib today, armed groups have free rein to commit war crimes and other violations of international humanitarian law with impunity,” he added.

The report is based on 24 accounts of abduction by anti-regime groups between 2012 and 2016 and another five cases of torture.

Halim, a humanitarian worker, was kidnapped and tortured by Nureddin Zinki rebels in Aleppo city until he confessed to a crime.
“When I refused to sign the confession paper the interrogator ordered the guard to torture me,” he said.

“He then started beating me with cables on the soles of my feet. I couldn’t bear the pain so I signed the paper,” Halim said.

Extremist and hardline religious groups operate their own religious courts which punish crimes such as apostasy or adultery with death.

  37. Iraq war decision justified: Australia's Howard...

Former Australian leader John Howard Thursday defended his decision to go to war with Iraq alongside the United States and Britain, saying it was justified at the time and there was "no lie".

His comments follow an inquiry into Britain's role in the conflict which found its then prime minister Tony Blair took his country into a badly planned, woefully executed and legally questionable conflict in Iraq in 2003.

Howard, prime minister from 1996 to 2007 and considered with Blair to be George W. Bush's staunchest ally in the U.S.-led invasion, said he regretted the loss of life but stood by his decision.

"I believed that the decision to go into Iraq was justified at the time and I don't resile from that because I thought it was the right decision," he told a press conference in Sydney.

Asked whether he should offer an apology to military families, Howard said: "Obviously I am sorry for the wounds or injuries that anybody suffered.

"But if you're saying to me do I apologize for the decision that I took, the core decision? Well, I defend that decision. Of course I defend it....AFP

"We sold everything we had in Cuba. Our house and everything in it," Lisbet Franco, one of more than 1,000 Cubans stranded in the small Colombian port town of Turbo, told Al Jazeera on Wednesday.

Migrants from Latin America have long travelled overland to reach the US border. More recently, they have been joined by a surge in migrants from Cuba, as well as from Africa and Asia.

Russia purposefully aggravates instability where possible in a hope to split the West and achieve her geopolitical objectives, he continued.

A roadside explosive device planted in North Sinai's Arish city blasted when a police vehicle was passing by, killing one police officer and a sergeant.

Three other policemen were injured and sent to a military hospital for treatment.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said that security services have redoubled their efforts to catch terrorists responsible for such attacks in the vicinity of Arish and Sheikh Zuweid, the report said.

Egypt has been battling a growing wave of anti-government terrorism since the military removed former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and later blacklisted his Muslim Brotherhood group.

A Sinai-based militant group loyal to the Islamic State (IS) regional terror group claimed responsibility for most of the terrorist operations that killed hundreds of police and military men over the past few years.

The Egyptian military has been launching a continuous massive security campaign in the peninsula which left about 1,000 militants killed and a similar number of suspects arrested.

The security raids in Sinai are part of the country's "war against terrorism" declared by ex-military chief and now President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi following Morsi's ouster.

  69. Iran calls in French envoy over exiled opposition rally...

Iran has called in the French ambassador and lodged a formal protest over a rally outside Paris held by an exiled opposition group last weekend, a diplomatic source said Wednesday.

The National Council of Resistance in Iran (NCRI), which includes the former rebel People's Mujahedeen of Iran (MEK), claimed that 100,000 Iranians attended the annual rally at Le Bourget, near Paris, on Saturday.

"The holding of this rally by those whose hands are stained with the blood of the Iranian people... is unacceptable," said the message handed to French ambassador Francois Senemaud by senior foreign ministry official Abolqassem Delfi, state media reported.

The MEK is reviled by Tehran for siding with Saddam Hussein's regime during the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88.

The US State Department listed it as a "terrorist organisation" in 1997.

After the US-led invasion of 2003, its remaining fighters were disarmed and placed in camps where many of them remain with their families to this day.

It was removed from terrorist watch lists by the European Union in 2008 and the United States in 2012.

Iranian government spokesman Mohammad Bagher Nobakht described the NCRI as an "annihilated terrorist group" and a "stinking corpse".

Amaq did not specify when Shishani was killed, but the loss of the commander is a significant blow to the jihadist group, which has suffered a string of setbacks in Iraq this year.

The Pentagon announced in March that American forces had killed Shishani and said his death would likely hamper IS's ability to carry out operations inside and outside of Iraq and Syria.

But it did not specify how or where he was killed.

US officials previously said Shishani "likely died" in an air strike, but reports surfaced that he had survived.

Shishani was a fierce, battle-hardened warlord with roots in Georgia and a thick red beard who was one of the most notorious faces of IS.

Shishani, whose nom de guerre means "Omar the Chechen", was one of the IS leaders most wanted by Washington which had put a multi-million-dollar bounty on his head..AFP...france24.com

The United States probed links between the Saudi government and the 9/11 attacks, finding multiple suspicions but no proven ties, documents declassified Friday showed.

Following a decision by President Barack Obama, the so-called "28 pages" of findings were made public, showing that intelligence agencies were not able to "identify definitively" Saudi links to attacks on US soil, including the 2001 plane strikes on New York and Washington.

Saudi Arabia welcomed on Friday the release of the classified pages and hoped their release would clear up suspicions about Riyadh's actions, intentions or long-term friendship with the United States.

"Since 2002, the 9/11 Commission and several government agencies, including the CIA and the FBI, have investigated the contents of the '28 Pages' and have confirmed that neither the Saudi government, nor senior Saudi officials, nor any person acting on behalf of the Saudi government provided any support or encouragement for these attacks," Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, Abdullah al-Saud, said in a statement.

"We hope the release of these pages will clear up, once and for all, any lingering questions or suspicions about Saudi Arabia's actions, intentions, or long-term friendship with the United States."

Special forces teams from countries including France, Britain and the United States are on the ground in western and eastern Libya to fight Islamist militants.

The French have been working alongside forces loyal to eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar who have been battling Islamist militants and other opponents in Benghazi and elsewhere in the east. But Haftar has rejected the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, which is backed by major Western powers — including France.

126. Germany must face the fact that Islamist terrorism has arrived and respond with tougher security and tighter immigration policies, Bavaria's state premier said on Tuesday...

"Each attack, each act of terrorism, is one too many. Islamist terrorism has arrived in Germany," Horst Seehofer, a long-standing critic of Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door refugee policy, told a news conference.

"We need more security in Germany. People are riled up, full of fear, and that is completely understandable. They need reliable answers from politicians and not endless debates and justifications," Seehofer said after a meeting of party leaders.

A spate of attacks in Germany since July 18 have left 15 people dead - including four attackers - and dozens injured. Two of the assailants had links to Islamist militant groups, German officials say.

Two of the five attackers recently entered Germany from Syria, another was from either Pakistan or Afghanistan, stoking concerns about unprecedented immigration after 1 million migrants arrived last year, many fleeing conflict in the region.
