Farage claims victory in EU referendum : BBC, ITV and Sky News have all called the poll in favour of the Leave campaign.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage appears to have claimed victory in the UK referendum on EU membership.

Speaking as voting indicates the Leave side is on its way to an historic win, Mr Farage said "Let June 23 go down in our history as our independence day."

Mr Farage said he was "daring to dream" of victory as Leave established a lead of several hundred thousand votes.

His speech marked a remarkable turnaround from just hours before when he was predicting a victory for Remain, citing private polling by his friends in the City.

Mr Farage told a jubilant Leave.EU rally in central London: "Dare to dream that the dawn is breaking on an independent United Kingdom.

"This, if the predictions now are right, this will be a victory for real people, a victory for ordinary people, a victory for decent people.

"We have fought against the multinationals, we have fought against the big merchant banks, we have fought against big politics, we have fought against lies, corruption and deceit.

"And today honesty, decency and belief in nation, I think now is going to win.

"And we will have done it without having to fight, without a single bullet being fired, we'd have done it by damned hard work on the ground."

The UKIP leader also heaped pressure upon British Prime Minister David Cameron, saying he should resign "immediately".

A Labour source also said: "If we vote to leave, Cameron should seriously consider his position."

Mr Cameron, who advocated a vote to Remain in the EU, received the support of 84 pro-Brexit Conservative MPs after polls closed at 10pm.

Boris Johnson and Michael Gove were among prominent party members who signed a letter to Mr Cameron urging him to stay on as leader whatever the result.

However, there is no doubt a Leave vote would place severe pressure on him to step down.
