EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo with 69 on board disappears from radar

A Cairo-bound AirEgypt passenger plane carrying 69 people from Paris early Thursday disappeared from radar screens, international media reported.

The carrier confirmed the reports, specifying that the aircraft carries 59 passengers and 10 crew.

A tweet on the airline's official account said flight MS804 left Paris at 23:09 pm local time (2109 GMT), "heading to Cairo (and) has disappeared from radar".

The plane was flying at 11,300 meters when it went missing over the eastern Mediterranean.

  1. EgyptAir says the plane disappeared about 10 miles (16km) into Egyptian air space and the relevant authorities have been notified.

    The search operation is being co-ordinated with the Greek authorities.

    In a later update, EgyptAir said that three children were among those on board the plane.

    Aviation analyst Alex Macheras told the BBC that Airbus A320s were regularly used for short-haul budget flights and had "an amazing safety record".

    The EgyptAir aircraft left Paris at 23:09 local time on Wednesday (21:09 GMT) and was scheduled to arrive in the Egyptian capital soon after 03:00 local time on Thursday.

  2. A Greek aviation official told the AFP news agency that the plane crashed "around 130 nautical miles" off the southern Greek island of Karpathos, although this has not been confirmed...

    Both the Greek and Egyptian armed forces are involved in the search for the plane. France says it is sending boats and planes to help in the operation....BBC

  3. Egyptian state newspaper Ahram reported no distress call was made and the last contact was ten minutes before the plane disappeared....

    The pilot had clocked up 6,275 hours of flying experience, including 2,101 hours on the A320, while the first officer had 2,766 hours, the airline said.

    Greek air traffic controllers spoke to the pilot over the island of Kea, in what was thought to be the last broadcast from the aircraft.

    "The pilot did not mention any problems," Kostas Litzerakis, the head of Greece's civil aviation department, said.

    However, during the transfer to Cairo airspace, Greek controllers were unable to reach the pilot and the plane vanished from their radars shortly after leaving Greek airspace, he added.

    Greece said it had deployed aircraft and a frigate to the area to help with the search......rte.ie

  4. Passengers on the plane included 30 Egyptians, 15 French, two Iraqis and one passenger each from the United Kingdom, Belgium, Chad, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Portugal, Algeria, Canada and Kuwait.

  7. Egyptian-led search efforts to locate EgyptAir Flight 804 have picked up in the Mediterranean...

    Greece has joined the operation with two aircraft, according to officials at the Hellenic National Defense General Staff. France has also offered to send military planes an boats, while a number of merchant vessels are combing the waters near to where the Airbus A320 is believed to have vanished.

  11. French President Francois Hollande has announced that they have confirmation that the EgyptAir plane reported missing has been 'damaged and lost'. Hollande stressed that no hypothesis should be ruled out, but they are keen on "finding the truth"...
    Earlier, France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Thursday "no theory can be ruled out" in the missing EgyptAir flight.

  12. Greek civil aviation chief Constantinos Litzerakos told Antenna TV that "the flight controllers contacted the pilot (with the plane) at a height of 37,000 feet (near Athens)... he did not mention a problem".

    He said the pilot "was in a good mood and gave thanks in Greek when authorised to exit the Athens flight information region.

    "We tracked the entire process from the plane's entry (into Greek airspace) to its exit, it does not appear to deviate at all from the coordinates we gave," Mr Litzerakos said.

  13. Kammenos said that EgyptAir Flight 804 dropped 22,000 feet and spun sharply before disappearing.

    “At 3:39am the course of the aircraft was south and south-east of Kassos and Karpathos (islands)… immediately after it entered Cairo (airspace) and made swerves… 90 degrees left and then 360 degrees to the right,” Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos said.

    Greek authorities have mounted a search in the area south of the island of Karpathos without result so far, he added.

    What this does suggest is that it is more of an incident in the cockpit itself of that aircraft. It does suggest it wasn't necessarily blown out of the sky by a missile potentially... it wasn't necessarily a device on board. It would suggest that the pilot has been involved in some way in an incident in the cockpit."

  15. Families of the victims on board EgyptAir Flight 804 have gathered at the Charles De Gaulle Airport near Paris. They have apparently been offered the option to travel to Cairo, as well as counseling and other medical assistance.

    The country's aviation minister says no debris has been found so far and authorities have tried to resume contact with the plane but were unable.

    He said the search efforts are focused near the Greek island of Karpathos.
