Western countries have blocked in the UN security Council of the Russian resolution on Syria

Western members of the UN Security Council blocked the Russia-proposed draft statement urging them to provide the most representative character of the upcoming round of inter-Syrian negotiations. This was announced by Russia’s permanent representative Vitaly Churkin, according TASS.

According to the diplomat, Moscow is worried that the Syrian Kurds are still not invited to the Geneva talks. According to him, “this line is contrary to the attitudes of UN security Council resolutions on the inclusiveness of the political process in Syria”.

“It seemed that our concern is shared by all key partners. We introduced members of the UN security Council a draft press statement with a call to ensure the most representative character of the inter-Syrian dialogue during the upcoming negotiations,” — said Churkin.

“We were surprised when the project was locked by some Western countries. Its destructive contribution made also by the Ukrainian delegation,” he added.

The talks on the situation in Syria under the auspices of the United Nations with the participation of Russia, the USA and other States started on 14 March in Geneva. The agenda defined by the UN security Council. The meeting involved the administration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition. The Kurds until the negotiations have not been allowed, primarily because of objections by Turkey.
