New Japan earthquake: Rescue operations under way. At least 15 people have been killed and hundreds injured

Rescue efforts are under way in south-western Japan to help victims of a powerful earthquake that hit the region a day after an earlier tremor.

Some 20,000 troops are being deployed in the operation in Kyushu region after the magnitude-7.3 quake at 01:25 on Saturday (15:25 GMT Friday).

At least 15 people have been killed and hundreds injured, media reports say.

Dozens of people are feared trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings. The quake on Thursday killed nine people.

Roads have been damaged and big landslides have been reported over a wide area. Some 200,000 households are now without power.

The extra troops are being sent to Kyushu to help police and firefighters. "We are making every effort to respond," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

The second quake - which was at a depth of 10km (six miles) near Kumamoto - was much bigger and hit a wider area than the one that struck the city of Kumamoto on Thursday night.

Thousands of people spent the night on the streets and in parks - where they were huddled under blankets looking dazed and afraid.

There are many reports of people trapped inside buildings, including at least 60 inside an old people's home.

One village has been evacuated after a dam collapsed as a result of the quake, public broadcaster NHK says. ..

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan early on Saturday, killing at least 16 people, injuring hundreds more and trapping people in collapsed buildings, barely a day after a quake killed nine people in the same region.

Rescuers dug through the rubble of collapsed buildings and mud and debris on Saturday to try and reach those trapped, but continued aftershocks hindered rescue efforts and fueled fears of more powerful quakes.....todayonline.com

  2. 21 dead after 7.3-magnitude quake, strong aftershock rock southwestern Japan ...

At least 12 people were killed after a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake rattled Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan's southwestern Kyushu island early Saturday, bringing the death toll to 21 since another temblor jolted the same region late Thursday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed that the quake, which struck Thursday night and was measured at 6.5 magnitude, was the foreshock of the Saturday's disaster, warning that there might be more aftershocks in the coming days.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cancelled his planned visit to Mashiki town, the epicenter of the quakes, scheduled for Saturday.

Many houses and buildings in the small town, which were already damaged during the devastating foreshock, were totally ruined by the 7.3-magnitude quake on Saturday, forcing people to take shelters in public facilities that also offer food and water supply.

"It was my first time in about 70 years to experience such huge earthquake," Yoshimura, who lives in Mashiki, told Xinhua, adding that he slept only one hour in the two days. The old man was staying in an earthquake shelter early Saturday as his house was severely damaged.

He also expressed his worries over the operating Sendai nuclear power plant near the quake-rattled Kumamoto Prefecture...........http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/978757.shtml
