France confirms Euro 2016 will go ahead despite terrorist threats

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Secretary of State for Sport Thierry Braillard emphasized on Wednesday that UEFA Euro 2016 will be held in France as scheduled from June 10 to July 10, despite terrorist threats.

Speaking to the media after Tuesday's terror attacks in Brussels, the two French politicians underlined that the European Championship will not be delayed or canceled.

Braillard told French newspaper L'Equipe that terrorist threats have been taken into consideration from the beginning, expressing his confidence that UEFA will not cancel this event.

  • Meanwhile, Valls told radio station Europe 1 that the cancellation of Euro 2016 "would be a defeat," and approved the importance of maintaining cultural and sporting events as scheduled, because this is the most effective way to respond to terrorism.

Valls pointed out that "unprecedented mobilization" will deal with any terrorist threats.

Noel Le Graet, president of the French Football Federation, said on Tuesday that there is no risk in holding Euro 2016.
