Local media reported on Thursday that at least five migrants drowned on Wednesday evening when their boat sank off the Aegean coast of Turkey.
The private Dogan news agency said the migrants included Iranian and Afghan nationals who were trying to reach the island of Lesbos.
According to the report, the boat departed from the town of Ayvacik in the province of Canakkale and it capsized about 500 meters from the Turkish coast because of harsh weather conditions.
Dogan added that initial reports claimed that the Turkish coast guard managed to rescue nine migrants but two others remain missing.
The incident came a day after Greek and Turkish prime ministers expressed their resolve to prevent illegal migration and human trafficking in the Aegean Sea.
