Turkey: Rocket projectile from Syria hits schoolyard in border town

One person was killed and a student was wounded after a mortar shell which appeared to have been fired from Syria struck a school in Turkey's southeastern border province of Kilis on Monday, the Kilis governor's office said.

The blast reportedly took place at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 18 near the Nazlı Ömer Çetin primary school in the center of Kilis, where four schools are located.

While the exact cause of the explosion was not initially know, the governor’s office announced one of three rocket projectiles fired from across the nearby Syrian border dropped in the school’s courtyard.

In a statement released on its website, the Kilis governor's office said that two of three mortar shells believed to be fired from Syria landed in an uninhabited area while the third mortar shell hit a school. A school janitor was killed and a female student was wounded during the incident, it said.

Two other rocket projectiles hit empty spaces and inflicted no harm on life or property, the governor’s office added.
