Au premier jour d’une visite à Istanbul, M. Biden a profité d’une rencontre avec un groupe d’intellectuels et de journalistes proches de l’opposition pour ajouter sa voix à ceux qui, en Turquie comme dans les capitales étrangères, s’inquiètent d’une dérive autoritaire de l’homme fort du pays.
«Quand les médias sont intimidés ou les journalistes emprisonnés pour des publications critiques (...) et que plus de 1.000 universitaires sont accusés de trahison simplement pour signer une pétition, ce n’est pas un bon exemple à donner», a-t-il lancé.
«Nous voulons que la Turquie montre un exemple fort, pour toute la région, de ce que signifie une démocratie active», a-t-il insisté.
Entre autres reproches, le vice-président américain a critiqué les poursuites engagées contre un gros millier d’intellectuels turcs qui ont signé la semaine dernière une pétition dénonçant des «massacres» commis par l’armée contre les civils pendant ses opérations contre le Parti des travailleurs du Kurdistan (PKK) dans le sud-est du pays...

ReplyDeleteU.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Friday called on Turkey to protect freedom of expression at a time when social media websites are routinely shut down and hundreds of academics are facing legal proceedings over remarks criticizing security operations against Kurdish militants in the southeast.
Biden is in Istanbul for a two-day visit, during which he is scheduled to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu for talks expected to focus on the war against ISIS group.
"The more Turkey succeeds, the stronger the message sent to the entire Middle East and parts of the world who are only beginning to grapple with the notion of freedom," Biden told reporters in Istanbul before meeting with a group of representatives from civil society groups.
"But when the media are intimidated or imprisoned for critical reporting, when internet freedom is curtailed and social media sites like YouTube or Twitter are shut down and when more than 1,000 academics are accused of treason simply by signing a petition, that's not the kind of example that needs to be set," he added...AP...http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/185657.aspx
