“Greek shipping was and will be first in the world’s arena” said the president of Greek Shipowners Association Theodoros Veniamis in his opening of the 2nd Shipping Congress of “Naftemporiki” newspaper.
Veniamis said that it is a huge hypocrisy the European to condemn the Greek tax system which they followed as model to save their own shipping, the european –yet they are eager to oblige Greece to impose more taxes on shipping.
“They claim that the tax regime is extremely favourable but when we presented to the state comparative financial data that prove how much more expensive is the taxation of a vessel and its management in Greece, particularly after the voluntary doubling of the taxation, the government realised that other states are much ore favourable to their shipping industry” he added.
According to Lloyd’s List Intelligence, there are 5.226 ships (of total dwt 334,649 mill.) under greek ownership. The greek tonnage is by 58 mill. dwt bigger than Japan’s (which is second) and twice the Chinese (whch is 3d).
Greek ship-owners invested in 2015 more than 8.5 billion dollars for the purchase of second hand vessels or for building new ones. In the second-hand market they invested 5.1 billion dollars. Regarding shipbuilding, the Greek ship-owners in 2015 placed orders for 173 new ships -in 2014 orders were placed for 127 ships.
