Germany addresses Poland's concerns over pipeline project

Visiting German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel on Friday said Nordstream 2, a new pipeline to send Russia's gas to Germany, will go ahead as scheduled if Russia does not cut off gas lines from Ukraine and eastern Europe.

"We take seriously the concerns of Polish side," Gabriel told Polish Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. According to Gabriel, Germany won't continue the project without ensuring that gas supplies are provided to eastern Europe.

"We are a little bit worried about Poland's safety," Morawiecki said after their meeting, "not only geopolitical safety, but also gas safety."

During the press conference held after their meeting, the two officials said the Nord Stream 2 project will not worsen the relations between the two countries, including the economic relations.

Gabriel said Germany supported the diversification of gas supplies and expansion of gas networks, as the gas supply security must be ensured.

During their meeting, Morawiecki also stressed that efforts should be made to avoid the malfunction of the Schengen treaty as a result of the refugee crisis.
