2 More Refugees Die in Aegean, Scores Stranded at Greece-FYROM Border

ATHENS -- The Greek Coast Guard said two more people were killed on Wednesday in separate incidents with boats transporting migrants and refugees from Turkey to Lesvos island in Greece.

A woman and a 5-year-old child succumbed to hypothermia after two boats sank. At least 46 people have been rescued, while the number of missing individuals remains unknown.

In spite of rough waters, the flow of desperate people trying to flee war zones and seeking refuge in Europe Union nations continues unabated. On Tuesday, Greek Coast Guard officials said 1,028 people reached Greek islands in the Aegean Sea on board boats provided by smugglers. Official statistics revealed that over 800,000 people reached Greek shores last year, half of them on Lesvos island.

Meanwhile, at least 600 migrants and refugees were stranded on Tuesday in Idomeni, a border crossing between FYROM and Greece, amid subzero temperatures. Skopje shut down the border crossing because of congestion after a train broke down on the international railroad line to Slovenia.

The refugees, mostly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, took shelter at a gas station on Tuesday, close to the border crossing while waiting for it to reopen.

On Wednesday, Greece reopened a temporary camp that was set up by non-governmental organizations in August but was closed in December, as Athens is under pressure from European partners to stop the influx of refugees. The camp can house approximately 2,000 people in heated tents.
