Coalition Could Adjust Actions in Syria Amid Intensified Russian Campaign

Russia informed the United States about planned operations to fire cruise missiles at the ISIL stronghold of Raqqa, according to US Defense Department spokesperson Michelle Baldanza.

The US-led coalition against the Islamic State (ISIL) is not coordinating its actions with Russia in Syria, but can adjust its operations amid intensified Russian campaign in Raqqa, US Defense Department spokesperson Michelle Baldanza told Sputnik on Tuesday.

The spokesperson said Russia informed the United States about planned operations to fire cruise missiles at the ISIL stronghold of Raqqa.

“The notification was intended to help prevent accidents and ensure safe separation during operations in Syria – but this in no way constitutes coordination with Russian forces,” Baldanza said.

The spokesperson added, however, that the coalition pilots were instructed to “be prepared to adjust [activities] as needed on a case by case basis.”

Michelle Baldanza also noted that the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (ISIL) has continued its operations in Syria during intensified Russian airstrikes on Raqqa, but warned pilots to be on heightened alert.

“Coalition pilots were told to maintain a heightened level of awareness, continue planned missions,” Baldanza said. "We were not surprised by the Russian activities."

  2. Obama open to Russian cooperation in Syria if it focuses strikes on IS...

US President Barack Obama on Wednesday said that he told Russian Russian President Vladimir Putin that if Russia would shift their focus their military strategy from targeting Syrian rebels onto the Islamic State group that Washington would cooperate with Moscow in the fight.

"In their initial military incursion into Syria, they have been more focused on propping up President Assad," Obama said while in the Philippines for the G20 summit.

"If, in fact, he shifts his focus and the focus of his military, to what is the principle threat, which is ISIL, then that is what we want to see," Obama said using another acronym for the group.

"We are going to wait and see whether Russia does end up paying more attention to ISIL targets. If it does so, that's something we welcome."
