Australians believe large scale terror attack likely on home soil (poll)

An overwhelming majority of Australians believe a large-scale terror attack is likely on home soil, while one in four say it is inevitable.

The latest Newspoll of 1,573 people, conducted for local News Corp masthead The Australian at the weekend and published on Monday, found 76 percent of responders believe it is likely, very likely or inevitable a Paris style terror attack will occur in Australia.

Just 1 percent say it will never happen, with 15 percent ranking the chance as unlikely or highly unlikely.

The poll also shows two thirds of Australians believe Australia's Muslim community is not doing enough to condemn the terror attacks, likely factoring in the recent public backlash against Australia's Grand Mufti in recent weeks.

Australian authorities have said they are doing everything within their power to prevent such attacks from occurring, including the high level surveillance of 400 individuals, 12 of which police say are capable of committing a lone-wolf style attack.

The weekend's poll came as demonstrators clashed with police at the weekend's anti-Islam and responsive anti-racism protests around Australia illustrating the polar nature of current public sentiment.

200 police officers in Sydney formed a barricade between the two protests, held at opposite ends of Sydney's Martin Place, only week after a candle lit vigil was held to mourn the victims of the Paris attacks.
