Second curfew declared in Turkey's Cizre

A second curfew has been declared in the Cizre district of the southeastern province of Şırnak amid operations to apprehend members of the "terrorist organization," the Şırnak Governor’s Office has stated.

The latest curfew comes less than 48 hours since the controversial last curfew ended.

The curfew is scheduled to begin from 7 p.m. on Sept. 13 until further notice, the governor’s office added.

The first curfew declared on Sept. 4 in Cizre was lifted on Sept. 12, after leaving the locals deprived of health and funeral services and access to food for days, according to witnesses and photographs from the town.

  1. Turkey: Second curfew declared in Cizre...

A curfew has been declared for the second time in a week in Turkey’s southeastern Cizre town in Sirnak province, the governor’s office has announced.

In a statement, it said the curfew would begin as of 19:00 (0400GMT) in Cizre over security concerns due to an ongoing security operation against PKK terrorist members.

The second curfew comes only within 36 hours of the first one, which lasted eight days.

"A curfew has been declared as of 19:00 (0400GMT) until further notice to ensure safety of life and property and to capture terror organization PKK members in Cizre," read the statement.

The eight-day curfew in the town ended at 7 a.m. local time (0400GMT) Saturday.

Turkish security forces have been conducting an anti-terror operation around the town of Cizre to counter PKK attacks.

Following a suicide bomb attack in July -- blamed on Daesh -- in the province of Sanliurfa that killed 33 people, PKK terrorist organization has renewed its armed campaign against Turkish forces.

The violence has stalled the "solution process” officially launched in early 2013, aimed at ending the 30-year conflict between the PKK and the Turkish state.

Since July, more than 100 members of the security forces have been martyred and hundreds of PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq, including airstrikes.
