U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday made an all-out effort to defend the Iran nuclear deal, warning that blocking the accord by Congress would lead to war in the Middle East.
"Congressional rejection of this deal leaves any U.S. administration that is absolutely committed to preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon with one option, another war in the Middle East," Obama said in a speech at the American University. " The choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war.".......we don't have an alternative

  1. Migrant crisis: Hungary rail station move sparks protests...

Hundreds of migrants have been protesting outside a major railway station in the Hungarian capital after police sealed off the terminal to stop them travelling through the EU.

Crowds of people chanted "Germany" and waved train tickets after being forced to leave Keleti station in Budapest.

Hungary is trying to restore order and enforce EU rules, officials said.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the fair distribution of refugees across Europe.

Austrian police said 3,650 migrants arrived in the Austrian capital, Vienna, from Hungary on Monday, with most heading for Germany.

Hungarian officials had earlier appeared to abandon efforts to register them under EU rules, which say they should seek asylum in the first EU country they enter, correspondents say......BBC

  3. Russia turns down Japan’s protest over Russian minister’s trip to disputed islands...

The Russian side has turned down Japan’s protest over the Russian agriculture minister’s trip to Iturup, the biggest island in the Southern Kuril Archipelago, a source at the Russian embassy in Japan told TASS.

"Today we received a protest, which we certainly turned down," the Russian embassy said.

Earlier, Hajime Hayashi, the head of the Japan Foreign Ministry's European Affairs Bureau, voiced a protest to Russian Ambassador to Japan Yevgeny Afanasyev over the Russian minister’s visit to Iturup.

  4. British journalists arrested ‘for listing PKK affiliates in a notebook,’: Anadolu Agency...

The abbreviations and English translations of organizations linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) written in a notebook has been mentioned among the evidence seized by the police in the arrest of two British journalists working for VICE News, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.

Jake Hanrahan and Philip Pendlebury, as well as their Iraqi translator Mohammed Ismael Rasool, were arrested by a court in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Aug. 31.

Although the Aug. 27 tipoff that led to the Aug. 28 detention of the two journalists claimed they had helped the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, the court issued the ruling for their arrest on suspicion they had supported the PKK in the southeastern Mardin, Şırnak and Diyarbakır provinces.

The case has sown confusion, as Turkish media reported authorities interrogated Hanrahan and Pendlebury, asking them questions about possible links to both ISIL and the PKK, two outlawed organizations which are currently fighting each other.

“As the prosecutor’s investigation deepened in line with testimonies and seized evidence, the opinion that the three journalists were in a relationship with the PKK has gained weight,” the agency reported on Sept. 1.

The 700-word Anadolu Agency story also listed the evidence. “A notebook in which the abbreviations and English translations of the PKK/KCK [Kurdish Communities Union] terror organization’s affiliated entities was found in the hotel room that the journalists were staying in,” the agency said..................http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/british-journalists-arrested-for-listing-pkk-affiliates-in-a-notebook-anadolu-agency.aspx?pageID=238&nID=87854&NewsCatID=509

  5. A large weapons stash was discovered Tuesday on a cargo ship off the Greek island of Crete, a police source said, with initial information suggesting it sailed from Turkey and was headed for Libya...

Greek port police boarded the Haddad 1 and found shotguns in a shipping container, although no details were given on the other weapons found.

The Bolivian-flagged ship had a seven-strong crew of Syrians and Egyptians. The boat was seized off Ierapetra on Crete's southern coast because it was not carrying the correct papers for its cargo, the police source said.

The boat was being towed to another port on the island for further investigation.

  7. The Daesh militant group on Tuesday wrested control of several parts of the Al-Qadam district of Damascus from opposition forces, local sources have told Anadolu Agency...

According to sources close to the fighting, Daesh militants began attacking Syrian opposition fighters in the Al-Qadam district Saturday.

Clashes remained ongoing Tuesday as opposition fighters attempted to retake lost areas.

Daesh supporters shared photos and maps on social media showing the group’s control over several areas of Al-Qadam, which, they pointed out, were "only 10 kilometers from the Umayyad Mosque in central Damascus".

Meanwhile, Jaysh al-Islam, a Syrian opposition group based in Damascus, announced Tuesday that it had attacked Daesh positions in the Al-Hajar al-Aswad district to the east of Al-Qadam.

Daesh uses Al-Hajar al-Aswad as a staging point for attacks on opposition forces in Damascus.

Syria’s ongoing civil war, now in its fifth year, has led to the death of at least 250,000 people and made the country the world's single-largest source of refugees, according to UN figures.

  8. At least 18 Turkish construction workers have been kidnapped by gunmen in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, Iraqi and Turkish officials say...

The workers were employed by a Turkish company building a sports stadium in the north-eastern Sadr City district.

They were sleeping in caravans at the site when armed men wearing military uniforms reportedly arrived in pick-up trucks at dawn and took them away.

Neither the identity nor the motive of the kidnappers was immediately known.

Turkey recently began carrying out air strikes against Islamic State (IS) in Syria, and allowing US warplanes to use its bases to bomb the jihadist group.

Last June, 46 Turkish citizens were seized by IS militants as they captured the northern city of Mosul. They were released unharmed after more than three months in captivity.

Sadr City is also stronghold of the pro-government Shia militias battling IS on the ground in Iraq.

  9. 4,300 migrants arrive in Athens as govt holds crisis talks...

The Greek government was set to hold talks on Wednesday on the huge numbers of migrants landing on its shores, as some 4,300 more people arrived in Athens overnight, most of them Syrian refugees.

Two ships carrying the latest arrivals docked at Athens' Piraeus port after sailing from Lesbos, one of several Greek islands struggling to cope with the huge waves of people crossing the Mediterranean from Turkey in flimsy boats.

Some 1,800 people arrived on the Greek mainland on Tuesday evening, with another 2,500 landing at dawn, port police said, adding that they had been taken to a nearby train station.

The ships were chartered by the Greek government to help relieve pressure on Lesbos, whose authorities and infrastructure are ill-equipped to deal with the huge influx of people.

More than 160,000 people have arrived in Greece this year, most of them fleeing war in the Middle East, as Europe grapples with its biggest migration crisis since World War II.

For many, Athens will be merely the first stop in a gruelling land journey north through the Balkans in a bid to reach Hungary, a key entry point into Europe.

The numbers crossing from Turkey to Greece have soared over the summer as the migrants, many paying over $1,000 to smugglers for the risky passage, take advantage of the calm seas to make the crossing........AP........timesofindia.indiatimes.com

"At the end of the investigation... it has not been demonstrated that Mr Yasser Arafat was murdered by polonium-210 poisoning," the three judges ruled, according to a statement from the prosecutor at the court in Nanterre.

Arafat died in Percy military hospital near Paris aged 75 in November 2004 after developing stomach pains while at his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

  13. Five Chinese ships seen off Alaska coast, Pentagon says...

Five Chinese naval ships are currently positioned in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, US officials confirm.

It is believed to be the first time Chinese military vessels have been seen operating in the area.

Officials say they have been monitoring the ships' activities, but said they were operating in international waters.

In recent years Beijing has taken a more assertive stance on maritime territorial disputes with Japan and South East Asian nations.
    'Not threatening'

US defence officials have spotted three Chinese combat ships, a supply vessel and an amphibious ship moving toward the Aleutian Islands which is split between Russian and US control, according to the Wall Street Journal.

They were seen not far from where US President Barack Obama is visiting as part of his three-day tour of Alaska to raise awareness of the effects of climate change on the state.

"We are aware of the five People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ships in the Bering Sea. This is the first time we have observed PLAN ships in the Bering Sea," US defence department spokesman Bill Urban told the BBC on Wednesday.

Media reports about Russian military planes in Syria have already been disavowed by Russia’s Defense Ministry and presidential administration, Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

"I saw reports about Russian planes on the Syrian territory. I also saw comments on this matter by Russia’s Defense Ministry and presidential administration that disavowed this information. There is nothing to add here," Zakharova said.

  18. Hungarian PM says borders must be protected...

Europeans risk becoming a minority on their own continent, Hungary's prime minister said, defending his country's hardline stand on migrants after hundreds spent the night stranded on a train surrounded by police.

He spoke as hundreds of migrants, many of them Syrian refugees, woke after a night on a packed train stranded at a railway station west of Budapest, refusing to go to a nearby camp to process asylum seekers.

"The reality is that Europe is threatened by a mass inflow of people, many tens of millions of people could come to Europe," Viktor Orban told public radio in a regular interview.

"Now we talk about hundreds of thousands but next year we will talk about millions and there is no end to this," he said.

"All of a sudden we will see that we are in minority in our own continent."

Migrants had wrestled with police yesterday after being ordered off the train at Bicske, some throwing themselves on the tracks insisting they be allowed to remain on the train bound for a border town near Austria.

The train had left Budapest after a two-day standoff at the city's main railway station as police barred entry to some 2,000 migrants.

Hungary says they must be registered, as per European Union rules, but many refuse, fearing they will be sent back to Hungary if caught later in western and northern Europe........http://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0904/725574-migrants/

But the death of Kurdi - along with his 5-year old brother Galip, his mother and nine others - has done little to deter migrants, many refugees from war in the Middle East, from taking to small boats for the 4 km (2 mile) nocturnal crossing to Kos from Bodrum.

    1. UK to accept thousands more Syrian refugees, Cameron says ...

Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday that Britain would take in “thousands more” Syrian refugees and spend millions more in humanitarian aid after an outpouring of emotion over the image of a drowned Syrian toddler put him under pressure to act.

Cameron gave no precise figures, but a spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency told reporters in Geneva that the British move would improve the lives of 4,000 Syrians.

As Europe seems at a loss to cope with thousands of migrants and refugees from the Middle East and Africa seeking safety or better lives on the continent, many at home and abroad had accused Cameron’s government of being uncaring and inflexible.

Several of his own Conservative legislators and the human rights chief of the Council of Europe urged Britain to take in more refugees.

“Given the scale of the crisis and the suffering of people, today I can announce that we will do more in providing resettlement for thousands more Syrian refugees,” Cameron told reporters in Lisbon after meeting his Portuguese counterpart................http://www.france24.com/en/20150904-uk-accept-thousands-more-syrian-refugees-cameron-says

The UK-based Syria Observatory for Human Rights said that 27 IS fighters were killed, with the rest being from other anti-government groups.

Marea lies in an area that Turkey and the US have reportedly wanted to turn into an IS-free "safe zone".

Last month it was alleged IS had used chemical weapons in an attack on Marea.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said that on 21 August it had treated four members of a family who suffered from breathing difficulties and developed blisters after a mortar hit their home in Marea.

The Syrian American Medical Society has also reported receiving 50 patients showing symptoms of chemical exposure.

Local rebels say the shells were fired from an IS-held village to the east.

1. Israel PM says country cannot take migrants...

Israel’s prime minister has said his country is not indifferent to the plight of migrants and refugees flooding Europe, but that Israel is too vulnerable to absorb them.

Benjamin Netanyahu bemoaned the “human tragedy” of the victims of Syria’s civil war and said Israel has aided them in various ways. But he added that Israel is too small a country, both geographically and demographically, to provide a haven for a large influx of migrants.

Israel runs a field hospital on its border with Syria and has taken in wounded Syrians, but has stopped short of opening the borders to its longtime enemy.

UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that the recent wave of migration could have disastrous consequences for Europe and cause acute food insecurity. In an exclusive interview to TOI's Kounteya Sinha, FAO's representative to India, Shyam Khadka says Europe can learn from India which has a rich experience in dealing with humanitarian crisis and also has experience of implementing the world's largest public distribution system for food

How serious is the migration crisis in Europe, especially for food security in the world?

The migration crisis we are seeing in Europe is very serious in humanitarian terms. Its impact on the overall food supply at the global level, however, would not be very pronounced at this stage. For the affected migrating families, however, food security is clearly an issue and in a large number of cases, the main reason behind their migration. Since war or war-like situation in places where from out-migration is taking place would affect food production and supply locally, we need to ensure improved security and assured means for livelihood in an urgent basis. Otherwise, this crisis will persist, may even escalate bringing disastrous consequences to Europe and potentially other parts of the world......................http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/uk/Recent-wave-of-migration-could-have-disastrous-consequences-for-Europe-FAOs-India-representative-Shyam-Khadka/articleshow/48872381.cms

During his visit to Israel, Ramallah, Turkey and Cyprus from Sept. 8-11, Tusk will discuss regional issues and cooperation, including how to help manage the migration crisis, according to a statement on the European Council’s official webpage.

“The objectives of the visits will be to discuss how the EU can help prevent and fight illegal migration while protecting those in need and preventing further loss of life, stabilize the region and move forward with the Middle East peace process and reach a settlement to end the division of the island of Cyprus,” the European Council said.

“Instability in the Mediterranean region poses a serious threat for the whole of Europe. The European Council made it one of its priorities to ensure effective EU cooperation on security issues, such as terrorism and the management of migration flows,” it added, recalling that in June 2015, EU leaders agreed on a series of measures on migration covering the areas of relocation and resettlement, return and readmission and cooperation with third countries.

“We should accelerate the parts of the enlargement process related to immigration and asylum so that these countries have a better infrastructure for handling migration challenges. And there is a clear need to revitalize links with Turkey so that we are once again confident friends and partners on this and in other matters,” Tusk said last week, at the annual EU Ambassadors’ conference.......hurriyetdailynews.com

(Belga)

The sources, speaking to Reuters on condition they not be identified, gave the most forthright account yet from the region of what U.S. officials say appears to be a new military buildup by Moscow, one of President Bashar al-Assad's main allies, though one of the sources said the numbers of Russians involved so far were small.

Jeremy Corbyn surged to a stunning victory on Saturday to win the leadership of the UK’s main opposition Labour Party, in a triumph that reflected broader anti-austerity winds sweeping Europe.

The socialist leader, whose odds of winning were 100/1 just four months ago, swept to victory in the first round of the contest with 251,417 votes or 59.5 percent of the ballots cast.

Cheers and applause erupted in Westminster Hall in London at the announcement, with his delighted supporters chanting, "Jez we did!"

Corbyn thanked everyone who took part in "this huge democratic exercise" which he says has shown Labour to be "passionate, democratic, diverse, united and determined in our quest for a decent and better society", according to the BBC.

    Anti austerity

The newly-elected leader also condemned the UK’s "grotesque levels of inequality" and "unfair welfare system" in his victory speech to party members in the UK capital. Corbyn a proponent of higher taxes and more public spending, is steadfastly opposed to the austerity programme of Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron..............france24.com

  67. Egyptian security forces accidently killed 12 Egyptians and Mexicans in the vast Western Desert after mistaking them for terrorists, the interior ministry said on Monday...

“A joint police and army force were chasing terrorist elements in the western desert area of Al-Wahat and they engaged by mistake with four 4-wheel drives belonging to Mexican tourists who were present in a restricted area,” a statement from Egypt’s interior ministry read.

“The incident resulted in the death of 12 people and the injury of 10 Mexicans and Egyptians, who have been transferred to hospitals for treatment.”

The ministry did not specify the death toll of Egyptians and Mexicans apiece.

The vast Western Desert, which is the gateway to volatile and lawless Libya, has been exploited by militants affiliated to the Islamic State group, who mainly target security forces in Sinai on Egypt’s eastern borders.

Last month, five Egyptian troops died when their helicopter crashed while chasing “terrorists” in the Siwa Oasis in the Western Desert. An army spokesman said that was due to a “technical failure”.

At least 21 Egyptian soldiers were killed in July 2014 when gunmen attacked a military checkpoint in the New Valley Governorate, also in the Western Desert.

“An inspection team was formed to identify what happened and why the tourist convoy was present in the aforementioned restricted area,” the interior ministry statement added.

Hundreds of police and army soldiers have been killed by militants since the July 2013 overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi, with the Islamic State-affiliated Sinai Province group claiming responsibility for many of the major attacks.

There were no immediate reports on any injuries or damage, but communications were disrupted.

Chilean authorities issued a tsunami alert for the country’s entire coast, and U.S. officials posted an alert for Hawaii. Chile’s emergency office warned that big waves caused by the quake could hit the coast by 11 p.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the quake at a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 but quickly revised the reading upward to 8.3. U.S. officials said the quake struck just offshore in the Pacific at 7:54 p.m. (6:54 p.m. EDT, 1154 GMT) and was centered about 141 miles (228 km) north-northwest of Santiago. It said the quake was 4.8 miles (5 km) below the surface.

Officials tell The Associated Press the Obama administration is considering taking the unprecedented step of abstaining from the annual UN vote condemning the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba.

If the administration abstains, it would mark the first time the U.S. has declined to take a stand against a UN resolution directly criticizing American law. And, it would effectively pit President Barack Obama and the rest of the world against Congress, which has refused to lift the embargo.

Last year's UN vote against the embargo was 188-2 - and only Israel joined the U.S.

  122. France FM rules out military participation in ground operation in Syria...

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius believes it is impossible as well as totally unreasonable for his country’s military forces to take part in the ground combat operation in Syria, French daily Le Figaro reported.

"It would be inadmissible to send French soldiers for the ground operation in Syria, moreover, letting them act alone since no other country intends to take a similar step," Fabius said in an interview with Le Figaro.

Fabius said that "the experience of armed conflicts in the past proved that wars of such nature are impossible to win in countries by means of armies from other countries."

"Of course, military aviation of international coalition could be of help and is capable of rendering a support, but in reality such military operations must be conducted by representatives of the local population and countries of the region," the top French diplomat said.

Asked whether it was inconsistent for France, which at first rejected ideas of delivering air strikes on Syria but then announced their necessity, Fabius said: "We have obtained verified data that militants of the Islamic State were preparing in Syria terrorist attacks on France and other countries."

"Facing such threat France decided to conduct reconnaissance flights, which would enable us to deliver air strikes if the need arises," he said. "This is a legal self-defense."

"There is no inconsistency in all of this as we have simply adjusted our stance to conditions of reinvigorated threat, which was proved to exist," Fabius added.

  123. The Egyptian security forces killed 19 militants on Monday during massive raids in the Western Desert and the restive Sinai peninsula, the Egyptian military spokesman said....

Brigadier-general Mohamed Samir pointed out that 10 militants were killed and one was injured and arrested in the Bahariya Oasis region in the Western Desert and nine others were killed on the 15th day of a large-scale anti-terror campaign in North Sinai province.

"The forces managed to eradicate a highly-dangerous armed terrorist cell in the Bahariya Oasis region that plotted to carry out attacks during the upcoming Muslim Sacrifice Feast," the military spokesman said in the statement.

A few days earlier, the Egyptian security forces killed 12 people including eight Mexican tourists by mistake while chasing militants with similar 4x4 vehicles near Bahariya Oasis in the country's Western Desert.

In North Sinai, the forces arrested 17 suspects, destroyed 25 hideouts, 28 huts and dens, 14 motorbikes and seven vehicles belonging to the militants.

Monday's raids in Sinai mark the 15th day of a large anti-terrorism operation that left hundreds of militants killed and a similar number of suspects arrested.

Last week, a police general was shot dead by unknown militants riding a vehicle and a soldier was also killed during a separate fire exchange with security forces in North Sinai.............http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/943754.shtml

  124. Chobani CEO urges hiring refugees to help solve migrant crisis...

In addition to donating a large portion of his personal wealth to the current migrant crisis, the Turkey-born founder of American yogurt company Chobani has stated his intention to hire refugees to help change their lives and their future.

Hamdi Ulukaya, CEO of Chobani, told CNN Money, “My background is the reason that I knew how important it is to be accepted into a new community. And I knew that it’s only possible if you get a job.”

Ulukaya started Chobani in 2007 and has been hiring refugees to work at his upstate New York plant since 2008. He had hired around 300 refugees, according to the CNN story.

“Even though I was hiring refugees here for five years, I didn’t know how bad this [current crisis] is,” he said.

Many migrants have been stalled in places like Lesbos, a Greek Island Ulukaya recently visited.

Ulukaya said that needs to change and the undertaking will require corporate America to step up.

A CNN reporter asked, “You’re asking business leaders to contribute. Why should they?”

Ulukaya responded, “Because we are effective.”

He said business leaders can do more than just write checks.

“Let’s face it, the way we’re dealing with the refugee crisis today is the same way that we did in the 1940s and 1950s. [A] refugee has a cell phone and the Facebook group [informs them about] which roads to follow. The way they deal is different than the conditions on the ground,” he said.

While he has promised to eventually give away most of his $1.4-billion-dollar fortune to support the cause, so far he has donated some $2 million for immediate relief.

  126. At least 38 ISIS fighters were killed in airstrikes by the Damascus regime against three jihadi-held towns in central Syria, activists said Tuesday....

Monday's strikes hit Palmyra and two other towns in Homs province, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

The Syrian air force has been increasing its strikes against ISIS in recent days as it received reinforcements from Russia, he said.

"The number of raids is growing and the strikes are more precise after the Syrian air force received arms and more efficient planes from Moscow," said Abdel Rahman, whose group relies on broad network of civilian, military and medical sources inside Syria.

Experts close to the regime have told AFP that Russia has sent advisers to train Syrian troops in the new weapons, in particular short-range air defense systems and tanks.

  128. Russian security service: Truck drivers blocked on Ukraine's border with Crimea may revolt...

Drivers of several hundred trucks stranded in Ukraine on the border with Crimea due to the so-called food blockade are on the verge of a revolt, a department of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB, former KGB) said on Tuesday.

"The persons crossing the state border say that a revolt is about to start among the drivers of the trucks on the adjacent territory as the goods inside them are spoiling," the Frontier Department of Russia’s state security service said.

The situation on the Russian checkpoints remains stable. The persons and cars cross the border in a normal regime. There are no trucks coming to Crimea from Ukraine, he added.

On Sunday, a group of protesters under Ukrainian parliament member Mustafa Dzhemilev, and leader of Crimean Tatars in Ukraine Refat Chubarov launched what they called a food blockade of Crimea to stop the traffic of trucks carrying foods to Crimea through border checkpoints. Later, they were joined by the extremist group Right Sector, which is outlawed in Russia.

Crimea’s head Sergey Aksyonov said earlier Ukraine’s blockade was nothing but a comedy film, since Ukrainian goods accounted for no more than five percent of all products on offer. If their supply from Ukraine ends, it will take two weeks to replace them, he said.

  159. Turks kidnapped in Baghdad appear in video promising their release...

Sixteen Turkish workers abducted in Baghdad earlier this month have appeared in an online video promising their release, days after a U.N.-backed deal to extricate Syrian villagers under siege from rebels supported by Ankara.

The men were kidnapped on Sept. 2 from a stadium they were building on the outskirts of the capital along with two others who were released earlier in the southern city of Basra.

The abductees had appeared in a video days after their capture, apparently held by an armed group that used a familiar Shi'ite Muslim slogan and threatened to attack Turkish interests in Iraq if its demands were not met.

The new video released late on Sunday showed the men sitting below the same slogan, clean-shaven and wearing T-shirts.

The video's authenticity could not be verified. Officials in Iraq and Turkey were not immediately available to comment...............channelnewsasia.com

Turkey has been Assad's most outspoken critic since Syria descended into bloodshed in 2011, blaming him for violence that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions more, and insisting he had to be removed.

But last week, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan floated the idea that Assad could be part of a transitional period. He later said his comments did not represent a policy change.

Davutoglu, in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, said on Sunday that Turkey would accept whatever political solution Syrians choose, but it could not include Assad, Hurriyet Daily News reported......Reuters

  161. Fresh clashes broke out Monday morning between Palestinians and Israeli police for the second consecutive day in Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound, ahead of opening the site to Jewish visitors...

A police spokesperson said Palestinian "rioters" barricaded themselves inside al-Aqsa Mosque and placed obstacles to block entry.

Following failed negotiation attempts, police entered the al-Aqsa compound at 6:45 am (4:45GMT), and were met with rocks and firecrackers threw by Palestinians within the mosque, the spokesperson said.

At least 15 Palestinians were wounded as the dozens of police stormed the site, Palestinian media reported.

The clashes erupted on the first day of the weeklong Jewish holiday of Sukkot, during which Jews were expected to arrive for prayers at the adjacent Wailing Wall.

Yellow umbrellas and makeshift tents were back in central Hong Kong on Monday (Sep 28) as protesters gathered a year to the day since huge pro-democracy rallies brought parts of the city to a standstill.

But with crowds numbering just a few hundred, the turnout was a reflection of the movement's loss of momentum after failing to push Beijing into allowing fully free leadership elections.

At the height of the 2014 protests, which lasted for more than two months, tens of thousands regularly gathered to demand political reform. Yet despite the unprecedented rallies which garnered extensive coverage across the world, protesters were unable to force change.

Frustrated activists now say they need to regroup and come up with new strategies, conceding that changing the minds of Beijing and the Hong Kong government is currently a hopeless task.

Broad coalition for fighting against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization is hardly possible now, and exchanging information and coordinating actions should be on top of the agenda at the current stage, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Naumkin told a press conference in TASS on Tuesday.

"Full-fledged coalition is hardly possible today," Naumkin said. "However, there are common interests, exchange of information, and this is important. Not many people want IS to exist," he noted.

"The main task now is to coordinate actions, exchange information, agree on informing each other about each other’s actions," Naumkin explained. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Tuesday that Japan needed to develop a stable and amicable relationship with China.

"Already we have gone through several rounds of summit meetings and we are steadfastly moving to further develop a mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests," Abe said at Bloomberg headquarters in New York.

Asked by Bloomberg founder Michael Bloomberg how Japan would deal with China's economic slowdown, Abe said:

"Certainly we export a lot, we invest a lot in China. Therefore the economic relationship between Japan and China is very close in the field of trade and investment. And therefore there is a need, we have to watch very carefully the path of the Chinese economy."

Abe has tried to improve relations with China, but progress has been slow over Japan's perceived failure to atone for its wartime aggression and China's increasingly assertive tone in territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas.
