Iraqi Prime Minister Approves Military Trial Over Ramadi Loss to ISIL/ISIS

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi on Sunday approved a recommendation to court martial military commanders for abandoning their positions during the battle with the Islamic State jihadist group for the city of Ramadi in central Iraq, his press service said.

The statement added that the investigative committee had decided to refer a number of commanders to the military justice for leaving their positions without a warrant.

“Dr. Haider al-Abadi endorsed the investigative board's resolutions on the withdrawal of Anbar Operations Command and the entities thereto from the city of Ramadi,” the statement said.

Ramadi, the capital of the Anbar governorate, was captured by ISIL militants on May 17. Hundreds of Iraqi soldiers and officers were killed in the battle and many more fled the city, leaving many of their weapons behind.
