Death toll rises to 27 in Bangkok explosion

At least 27 people were killed, including 2 Chinese and more than 100 others injured in an explosion in downtown Bangkok on Monday night, according to local media.

The explosion happened at about 7 p.m. local time near Erawan Shrine at Ratchaprasong intersection, a popular destination for domestic and foreign tourists.

The blast was caused by two explosives, with two more devices later defused, according to Bangkok Post.

The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.

The junta, or the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has denied rumors that it had declared state of emergency in Bangkok or ordered schools and businesses be closed on Tuesday.

A number of foreign nationals were seen injured and more than 40 vehicles damaged by the blast, according to witnesses.

It remains to be confirmed whether there are any Chinese casualties.

Roads around the intersection have been closed while police and soldiers are inspecting the site of the blast.

  4. Thai police say at least 10 involved in Bangkok bomb...

Thailand's police chief has said at least 10 people were suspected of involvement in a bomb attack in Bangkok this week that killed 20 people.

Earlier, police said they believed at least three people, including a foreign man, were involved in the attack on a famous city shrine.

"It is a big network. There was preparation using many people," police chief Somyot Poompanmuang told reporters.

"This includes those who looked out on the streets, prepared the bomb and those at the site and ... those who knew the escape route," he said. "There must have been at least 10 people involved."

People were seen paying their respect to the Hindu shrine after it reopened yesterday. Visitors left messages of condolences, flowers and candles at the site..........http://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0820/722421-thailand-bangkok-blast/
