  1. LatAm hails renewed Cuba-US ties, calls for end to embargo...

Countries throughout Latin America hailed on Tuesday the restoration of the Cuba-U.S. diplomatic ties, which culminated Monday with the reopening of their respective embassies.

With no exception, Latin American countries also called for an end to the half-century trade embargo against Cuba, which was imposed by the United States in 1960.

The government of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said it greeted the news "with satisfaction."

The president added that "this new step in the process of normalizing relations between the two countries confirms that dialogue, respect for sovereignty of nations and peoples, and abiding by international law are the only legitimate means to resolve differences."

The statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said it hoped this initial step would "immediately be followed with the lifting of the unjust and illegal embargo inflicted on the Cuban people.".................http://www.china.org.cn/world/2015-07/22/content_36120257.htm

  2. Guantanamo Bay: Closure plan in 'final stages'....

The White House is in the "final stages" of drafting a plan to close the controversial US military prison Guantanamo Bay, a spokesman has said.

Josh Earnest said the closure of the Cuban detention camp was a national security interest.

It was one of the first directives President Barack Obama ordered two months after he was elected in 2008.

Inmates have slowly been transferred out and at the start of the year, 122 men were left.

The peak population in 2003 was 684.

Mr Earnest said the administration was "in the final stages of drafting a plan to safely and responsibly (close) the prison at Guantanamo Bay and to present that to Congress".

He added: "That has been something that our national security officials have been working on for quite some time, primarily because it is a priority of the president."

In 2009, President Obama admitted the January 2010 deadline he had set for closing the counter-terrorism facility would be missed...............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33626398
