Ukraine to initiate UN Security Council meeting June 5 to discuss Maryinka events

Ukraine hopes that the United Nations Security Council will convene on June 5 to discuss the latest events in Maryinka , Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Nations Yuri Sergeyev worte in Twitter on Thursday.

"Ukraine will initiate a UN Security Council meeting tomorrow to discuss yesterday’s [June 3] events in Maryinka," Sergeyev wrote.

Active fighting between the Ukrainian army and the militia forces took place near the Maryinka populated locality near Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, on Wednesday. Eduard Basurin, deputy corps commander of the Defense Ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, described it as a full-scale Ukraine army provocation aimed to distract attention from preparations for a large military operation in the Luhansk region.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, in turn, that the worsening military situation on the disengagement line was the thorniest issue.

  1. The Kremlin will offer no comment on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s claims about an "unprecedentedly high risk" of Russian intrusion into his country...

"I do not believe that this (commentary from the Kremlin) is necessary because the Defense Ministry [of Russia] had made all explanations and expressed its attitude to such claims," Peskov said.

Earlier on Friday Poroshenko told a news conference he regarded the risk of a Russian intrusion in Ukraine as "unprecedentedly high."

  2. Western irritation grows as Kiev further violates Ukraine ceasefire — Russian UN envoy...

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations on Friday said there was "growing irritation" with Kiev among Western leaders for its repeated failure to fully implement ceasefire agreements signed in Minsk, Belarus, in February.

Vitaly Churkin said ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on the crisis in Ukraine: "The Security Council has convened to call for full implementation of the agreements reached in Minsk. In my statement, I will explain in details how Kiev violates political and military aspects of the Minsk agreements".

Churkin stressed that he was "under no illusion" that the Security Council would manage to issue a joint statement after the discussions.

"But I’ve noticed that some irritation exists in certain circles, even in Western countries that have to support Kiev no matter what it does. There is irritation with non-compliance with the Minsk agreements," he added...........http://tass.ru/en/world/799151

  3. West, Russia trade accusations at U.N. over new Ukraine violence...

Western nations and Russia traded accusations at the United Nations on Friday over the recent upsurge in violence in eastern Ukraine, while a senior member of an international monitoring team blamed both sides in the conflict for breaking a ceasefire.

The diplomatic clash between European, U.S. and Russian envoys came a day after Ukraine warned of a possible "full-scale invasion" by Russia, following the worst fighting with Russian-backed separatists in months.

The deputy head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) monitoring mission, Alexander Hug, was more balanced in his remarks to the Security Council. He said both sides of the conflict were putting civilians at risk as the security situation deteriorates.

"Civilians continue to bear an unacceptable price in this conflict," Hug told an emergency meeting of the 15-nation council. "They are killed and wounded, as both sides continue to place military positions in and around civilian infrastructure. Their property and livelihoods have been destroyed."

Britain placed the blame for the new violence squarely on Moscow.......reuters.com
