The French President Francois Hollande said there was "little time" to prevent Greece from leaving the eurozone.

Mr Hollande said on Monday the ball was firmly in Greece's court.

"It's not France's position to impose on Greece further cuts to smaller pensions, but rather to ask that they propose alternatives," he said on a visit to Algiers..........Time running out to stop Greece leaving euro

  1. Greece has missed the deadline for a €1.6bn (£1.1bn) payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), hours after eurozone ministers refused to extend its bailout...

But the ministers said they would discuss a last-minute suggestion from Greece for a new bailout programme.

Greece is the first advanced country to fail to repay a loan to the IMF and is now formally in arrears.

There are fears that this could put Greece at risk of leaving the euro.

The IMF confirmed that Greece had failed to make the payment, shortly after 22:00 GMT on Tuesday.

"We have informed our Executive Board that Greece is now in arrears and can only receive IMF financing once the arrears are cleared," said IMF spokesman Gerry Rice.....BBC

  2. Greece's bailout expires as Athens fails to repay IMF...

Greece slipped deeper into its financial abyss after the bailout programme it has relied on for five years expired at midnight on Tuesday and the country failed to repay a loan due to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

With its failure to repay the roughly $1.8bn to the IMF, Greece became the first developed country to fall into arrears on payments to the fund. The last country to do so was Zimbabwe in 2001.

After Greece made a last-ditch effort to extend its bailout, eurozone finance ministers decided in a teleconference late on Tuesday that there was no way they could reach a deal before the deadline.

"It would be crazy to extend the programme," said Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbleom, who heads the eurozone finance ministers' body known as the eurogroup. "So that cannot happen and will not happen."

"The programme expires tonight," Dijsselbleom said.

IMF spokesman Gerry Rice confirmed that Athens had missed its payment deadline.

"We have informed our executive board that Greece is now in arrears and can only receive IMF financing once the arrears are cleared," he said.

He said the board would consider a Greek request to extend the loan.

Overall, Greece owes the IMF close to $40bn..........aljazeera.com

  5. France to seek deal with Greece before referendum 'if possible'...

France will still try to reach a goal with Greece before a referendum on Sunday, French Finance Minister Michel Sapin has said, hours before eurozone finance ministers hold their second conference call in two days to discuss Greece.

"Our aim is to find an agreement, before the referendum if possible," Michel Sapin told RTL radio.

"Our aim is to see until the last minute whether it's possible to find a deal that paves the way for a return to stability in Greece and would reassure Europe and the world," he said.

It is unclear how much today's call could achieve.

  6. Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has offered new concessions to the country's creditors...

A letter to creditors sent by Mr Tsipras says he was prepared to accept most conditions that were on the table before talks collapsed and he called a referendum.

On Tuesday, eurozone finance ministers refused to extend the previous bailout.

But Germany says a new agreement on a bailout would not be possible until after the referendum this weekend.

Human rights body the Council of Europe has said the referendum, which will ask Greeks if they want to accept their creditors' proposals, would "fall short of international standards" if held as planned on Sunday.....BBC

  15. Iraq Christians Train to Recapture Homes from ISIL...

Several dozen Iraqi Christians are training to recapture their homes occupied by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant terrorist group.

A year ago, ISIL launched a fierce offensive in northern Iraq, capturing several areas and terrorized the citizens.

Thousands fled, but some wanted to fight back, and are now training at a military base near Baghdad airport.

They are now being trained on how to use their Kalashnikov assault rifles and on the basics of combat maneuvers.

China warned its citizens travelling in Turkey to be careful of anti-Beijing protests, warning them that some Chinese tourists have recently been "attacked and disturbed".

"Absolutely do not get close to or film the protests, and minimize to the greatest extent outside activities on one's own," the notice said.

The notice gave no details regarding the protests, but comes after Turkey's government expressed concern about reports that Muslim Uighur people in China's far western region of Xinjiang had been banned from worship and fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.

Turkey also vowed on Friday to keep its doors open to ethnic Uighur migrants fleeing persecution in China, a stance likely to exacerbate Ankara's row with Beijing over its treatment of the Turkic-language speaking minority.

  27. China shares jump despite Greek vote...

Mainland Chinese shares surged nearly 8% on Monday despite the rest of Asian markets trading lower on Greece's rejection of austerity demands.

The Shanghai Composite was up 2.6% to 3,783.69 after the government announced measures over the weekend to stabilise the tumbling stock markets.

In an unprecedented move, brokerages and fund managers vowed to buy massive amounts of stocks backed by the state.

But, Japan's Nikkei 225 was down 1.3% to 20,281.99 on Greece's "no" vote.

The euro fell across the board after Greek voters overwhelmingly rejected the conditions of a bailout package from its creditors in a referendum, increasing the odds of the country's exit from the eurozone.

The euro was at $1.1055 in Asian trade, recovering from one-month lows it hit earlier in the day.

Investors fled to the safe haven of the yen that rallied against the dollar and euro after Greek voters rejected the bailout terms by a wider margin than expected.

The euro fell 1.5% to a six-week low of 133.700 yen, but then recovered some losses to trade up to 135.41. However, it is still down from Friday's 136.185 yen.

Major commodities such as oil were also down with the price of Brent crude falling more than 1% to $59.72 in Asian trade.

They still don't want to listen to the people of Greece who made their voices heard on Sunday. The "plan" is not working and has brought untold misery to the Greek people over the past five years. My 26-year old (Greek) daughter is one of the "lucky" ones, an Athens University graduate with a teaching degree. She can't get a job in her profession due to austerity cuts, but she has secured an eight month contract working for an international company in Greece, working 8-10 hour days and bringing home the minimum wage of 480 euros per month (540 euros before tax - yes we do have P.A.Y.E. in Greece - and national insurance). Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had a final chance to present credible reform proposals to an emergency euro zone summit on Tuesday to persuade skeptical creditors to reopen aid talks before his country's banks run out of money.

With Greek lenders down to their last few days of cash and the European Central Bank tightening the noose on their funding, Tsipras must convince the bloc's other 18 leaders, many of whom are exasperated with five years of crisis, to authorize negotiations fast on a new loan to rescue Greece.

Bearded and wearing bright blue bandanas, the Islamic State group's "special forces" unit gathered around their commander just before they attacked the central Syrian town of al-Sukhna. "Victory or martyrdom," they screamed, pledging their allegiance to God and vowing never to retreat.

The IS calls them "Inghemasiyoun," Arabic for "those who immerse themselves." The elite shock troops are possibly the deadliest weapon in the extremist group's arsenal: Fanatical and disciplined, they infiltrate their targets, unleash mayhem and fight to the death, wearing explosives belts to blow themselves up among their opponents if they face defeat. They are credited with many of the group's stunning battlefield successes -- including the capture of al-Sukhna in May after the scene shown in an online video released by the group.

Turkey would struggle to cope with a new influx of refugees from Syria's civil war, and many of them would likely end up trying to get into Europe, Turkey's EU Affairs minister warned in comments published on Friday.

Turkey is already sheltering close to 2 million Syrian migrants, more than any of the war-torn country's other neighbors, making it the world's leading host of refugees. It now fears fighting around the northern Syrian city of Aleppo could push as many as 1 million more over its borders.

"Turkey has reached its total capacity for refugees. Now, there is talk that a new wave of refugees may emerge. That would exceed Turkey’s (capacity), and it would put the EU face to face with more migrants," Volkan Bozkir told the newspaper Hurriyet during a trip to Brussels.

Europe is already struggling with an immigration crisis, and European states cannot agree how to cope with it. 66. DPRK erects taller launch pad for long-range rocket: Yonhap...

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) erected a taller launch pad for long-range rocket at a rocket base near the west coast, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday citing a government official.

One person was killed and dozens were detained following looting of supermarkets in Venezuela's southeastern city of Ciudad Guayana on Friday morning, according to Venezuelan authorities...

Shoppers seeking scarce consumer staples including milk, rice and flour broke into a supermarket warehouse on Friday morning, leading businesses in the area to shut their doors, local newspaper Correo del Caroni reported.

President Nicolas Maduro said the violence was premeditated and blamed the United States as being behind it.Maduro said U.S. General John Kelly, Marine Corps commander of the Southern Command, predicted in February that there would be a "social implosion" in Venezuela in July.

"You all know that a military general of the United States doesn't predict," Maduro said on state television. "He orders and the battered Venezuelan right-wing executes."

Speaking at the Pentagon in March, Kelly said that Venezuela might see some change of leadership in the coming months.

"I certainly am not involved in any way, shape or form with coup planning. I don't know anyone that is. And I probably would know if someone was," he added, according to a Pentagon transcript.

Shops in the area surrounding the warehouse were either shuttered or protected by national guard and police on Friday.

The Venezuelan government has long blamed opposition leaders and businesses for the country's ills, saying they are waging an "economic war" against the government with backing from the United States.

Critics say the problems are due to a failing state-led economic model.............http://www.todayonline.com/world/venezuela-supermarket-looting-leaves-one-dead-dozens-detained
