EU to increase spending on migration in 2015

The European Union (EU) finance ministers agreed to increase spending to manage migration and refugee flows on Friday.
The EU will provide additional resources by 89 million euros (99.68 million US dollars) in commitments and 16.6 million euros in payments in a fast-track procedure, according to the EU statement.

The spending proposal was treated as a matter of "urgency and high political priority" in order to respond to migratory pressures in the Mediterranean, said the statement released after a monthly meeting of EU finance ministers.

  • At the same time, the finance ministers also accepted an increase of 66.5 million euros to the 2015 EU budget to deal with the damage caused by floods in Italy, Romania and Bulgaria.

The proposed budgets needed to be approved by the European Parliament next month. (1 euro = 1.14 US dollars)
