Turkey Unhappy With Luxembourg Genocide Resolution, Recalls Ambassador

On Wednesday, Luxembourg Parliament unanimously passed a resolution, recognizing the crimes and atrocities committed against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

"We condemn and vehemently reject the decision of the Parliament of Luxembourg. We notified Luxembourg Ambassador to Ankara of our stance and summoned him to our ministry. Turkish Ambassador to Luxembourg Levent Sahinkaya was recalled to Ankara for consultations," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

In April, Turkey summoned its ambassador to the Vatican after Pope Francis referred to the killings of Armenians during World War I as "the first genocide of the 20th century."

Ten days later, Ankara withdrew its ambassador to Vienna after the Austrian Parliament issued a statement recognizing and condemning the 1915 genocide.

Luxembourg joined dozens of other states and organizations that officially recognized the mass killings of Armenians in 1915, qualifying them as a genocide.

Turkey, the successor of the Ottoman Empire, refuses to use the word "genocide" to refer to the 1915 events, stating that Turkish nationals were also among victims.

Yerevan estimates that 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives during this period.

  1. Turkey condemns Luxembourg over genocide bid, withdraws envoy ...

Turkey has strongly condemned Luxembourg for recognizing the mass killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire during World War I as genocide and has pulled back its ambassador in protest against the European country.

“We condemn and strongly refute the decision taken by the Luxembourgish parliament by distorting historical facts and law,” read a Foreign Ministry statement issued on May 7, a day after the Luxembourg parliament adopted the resolution. A number of countries, including Austria, the Vatican and Russia, have recently described the events of 1915 as genocide, on the centennial of the mass killings of Armenians.

The Foreign Ministry recalled Turkish Ambassador to Luxembourg Levent Şahinkaya for consultation and summoned Luxembourg’s ambassador to Turkey, Arlette Conzemius, to express Turkey’s disturbance with the resolution.

Turkey has already withdrawn ambassadors from Austria and the Vatican but kept its envoy to Russia, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin using the word genocide and the Russian parliament adopting a likewise resolution on the 1915 events.
