FYROM News: EU 'Concerned' About FYROM Violence

European Union officials expressed "deep concern" after a daylong gun battle in northern FYROM killed eight police officers and 14 gunmen.

Dozens more were wounded in the clashes Saturday in the city of Kumanovo, 40 kilometers northeast of the capital, Skopje, in an ethnically Albanian area near the borders of Kosovo and Serbia.

Skirmishes continued Sunday, as the FYROM government declared a two-day period of national mourning for those killed.

President Gjorge Ivanov called a meeting of his security council in response to the events.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn called for calm late Saturday to preserve the country's "overall stability."

Interior Ministry spokesman Ivo Kotevski earlier said the gunmen had entered from a neighboring country he did not identify, to attack state institutions......voanews.com

    NATO and the EU called for a return to calm in FYROM Sunday after clashes between police and an armed group left at least 22 people dead, raising concerns about alleged ethnic-Albanian unrest in the Balkan region.

    "I urge everyone to exercise restraint and avoid any further escalation, in the interest of the country and the whole region," NATO Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement.

    Police spokesman Ivo Kotevski said Sunday that "eight police officers were killed and 37 were injured" in gun battles in Kumanovo, which began at dawn Saturday.

    Kotevski also said 14 bodies were discovered at the site. "We can't rule out we'll find even more," he added.....AFP......ahram.org.eg

  2. FYROM: Two cabinet ministers and head of secret services resign...

    FYROM’s interior minister Gordana Jankulovska, transport minister Mile Janakievski and secret services head (DSK) Saso Mijalkov resigned on the night of May 12.

    In their resignation letters which were made public, they did not give the reasons for their resignations, but only underlined that during their term in office, they have worked with professionalism and have served the interests of the state and citizens of the country.

    Prime minister’s Gruevski office said that parliament had received the proposals for the appointment of the new ministers. Mitko Cavkov, who is currently police commissioner, has been proposed as interior minister, Vlado Misajlkovski, who is also the head of a government agency, has been proposed for the post of minister of transport....
