Report claims rise in attacks against refugees in Germany

Refugee organizations in Germany are claiming that attacks against foreigners have more than tripled since last year.

Two NGOs, Pro Asyl and the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, have released new data claiming that at least 153 refugee residences were attacked and 35 foreigners’ buildings across Germany were targeted in 2014.

However, Germany's statistics office, Destatis, had reported that last year saw 58 immigrant residences attacked.

The NGOs’ study said that Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony were the three regions where most attacks took place. Only two regions, Saarland and Bremen, saw no attacks against displaced people.

Refugee organizations in Germany are now warning that the country’s peace might be damaged by these incidents.

Volker Beck, a Green Party MP, told The Anadolu Agency in Berlin on Friday that violent people were inciting racial hatred and risking the country’s peace.

A Turkish-German member of parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia, Ali Bas, told AA that the recent incidents worried him.

“These events remind me of past attacks on refugees in West and East Germany in the 90s,” he said.
