Donetsk republic dismisses reports on tortured Kiev prisoners of war as nonsense

The human rights commissioner of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Daria Morozova, on Friday rejected media reports on torture against Kiev prisoners of war as nonsense.

"I state officially that there is no single prisoner of war left on the republic’s territory. That’s why statements of some European, American human rights organizations that we allegedly torture prisoners of war cannot be called otherwise than nonsense," the Donetsk news agency quoted Morozova as saying.

The human rights commissioner noted that some Kiev troops who were detained on suspicion of committing crimes remain in the self-proclaimed Donetsk republic and criminal cases have been launched against them.

"We will try them in accordance with the republic’s laws. This practice is similar to that used by the Ukrainian authorities," she added.

The Amnesty International human rights organization reported on Thursday about the alleged "execution-style killings" of captured Ukrainian soldiers and security service personnel by militias. The US State Department later expressed concerns about the reports.
