  1. Yemen crisis: Islamic State claims Sanaa mosque attacks...

Islamic State (IS) say its militants carried out suicide bombings on two mosques in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which killed at least 137 people.

The attacks are the first claimed by IS - a Sunni group - since it set up a branch in Yemen in November.

Both mosques were used mainly by supporters of the Zaidi Shia-led Houthi rebel movement, which controls Sanaa.

Yemen has suffered from political instability for years and Houthi rebels control nine of the 21 provinces.

The government of internationally recognised President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi has fled to the southern port city of Aden.

Four suicide bombers attacked the Badr mosque, in the south of Sanaa, and the al-Hashoosh mosque, in the north of the capital, as worshippers gathered for Friday prayers.

At the Badr mosque, one bomber entered the building and detonated his explosives while other people were caught by the second bomber near the main gates.

Prominent Houthi cleric Al-Murtada bin Zayd al-Mahatwari, the imam of the Badr mosque, was among those killed, local media reported.

Two more bombers attacked the al-Hashoosh mosque, with one detonating explosives near the entrance and the other running into the mosque itself.................http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31989844

  2. Deadly attacks in Syria kill more than 100...

More than 100 people were killed in Syria in 24 hours of violence after fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) attacked regime troops and a suicide bomber caused carnage at Kurdish New Year celebrations, a monitor said Friday.

More than 70 members of government forces were killed when ISIS attacked checkpoints and other positions in the central Homs and Hama provinces, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP “most of the dead, around 50, fell in the Hama countryside.”

Several militants were also killed when clashes broke out, he added without giving a toll.

The regime controls most of Homs and Hama.

“ISIS has faced setbacks recently in the provinces of Aleppo and Raqa and in Hasakeh in confrontations with Kurds on the one hand and regime forces on the other, and are now trying to score military points, even limited ones, to offset their losses,” said Abdel Rahman.

Activists also reported shelling from forces loyal to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad in Aleppo's Al-Mashad neighborhood on Friday, according to Reuters news agency. The causalities from this attack were yet to be reported...............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/03/21/Deadly-attacks-in-Syria-kill-than-100-.html

  3. Top South Korea, Japan, China envoys aim to damp tension, discuss missiles, regional bank...

(Reuters) - The foreign ministers of South Korea, Japan and China on Saturday hold their first meeting in three years, in a bid to warm frosty ties and restore a regular three-way summit of their leaders, stalled because of tensions over history and territory.

The top diplomats also held bilateral meetings to discuss whether South Korea and Japan will join a China-led development bank and the potential deployment of a U.S. air defense system to counter North Korea's missile threat.

The meetings take place against the backdrop of South Korea and China's cool ties with Japan over what they see as its reluctance to properly atone for its wartime past. Both also have territorial disputes with Tokyo over islands.

The ministerial meeting will be a stepping stone for Asian neighbors' leaders to restore what had been an annual summit to discuss cooperation, South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said this week.

"Efforts are necessary to create the conditions for the summit meeting to be realized," Yun told South Korean media. The summit, on hold since May 2012, had been an annual fixture from 2008.

Arriving for a meeting with Yun, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he would discuss all the issues of interest to Beijing, signaling the subjects of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the THAAD missile defense system were not off the table....................http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/21/us-southkorea-china-japan-idUSKBN0MH02Q20150321?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

"The Secretary-General condemns the attacks targeting Nowruz celebrations in Al-Hasakah City in north-east Syria today. Initial reports suggest that two separate bombings killed and injured up to 100 persons, including women and children. These heinous attacks took place during a holiday that is customarily a time for Kurdish communities to come together to share their hopes for the new year," the United Nations said in a Friday statement.

7. Is Gagauzia next on Russia's list?.....What the world is witnessing today is not a resurgent Cold War or Soviet-style Russia, but an Imperial Russia...

Gagauzia, a tiny autonomous region in Moldova, checks most of the boxes for Russian meddling. It is ethnically Turkic, religiously Christian Orthodox, and the main language spoken is Russian. The region is a byproduct of imperial rivalry between the Ottoman and Russian empires typically found in the Black Sea basin in the 19th century. Like Crimea, it was taken by Russia from the Ottoman Empire. In this case, Russia acquired Gagauzia after the Russo-Turkish War (1806–1812) as part of the 1812 Treaty of Bucharest.

Today, it is the poorest region of Moldova and Gagauzians blame the westward orientation of the central government for many of their problems. Local politicians regularly use separatists and pro-Russian slogans to drum up local support. Events in eastern Ukraine have only encouraged this.

  8. Eyes on Diyarbakır for PKK leader Öcalan’s key Kurdish bid message...

All eyes will be on Diyarbakır on March 21, where a letter from the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan, will be read during Nevruz festivities, marking the arrival of spring.

In the letter, seen as a crucial step in the ongoing Kurdish peace process to find a solution to the decades-old problem that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, Öcalan is expected to express the conditions for the PKK to call a congress and end the armed struggle against Turkey, instead of a direct call to lay down arms.

The two-page letter will be read in Turkish by Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) lawmaker Sırrı Süreyya Önder and in Kurdish by HDP Deputy Parliamentary Group Chair Pervin Buldan, who are both members of the delegation meeting Öcalan and government officials.

In his messages, Öcalan will emphasize “the importance of continuing the reinforced ceasefire between the security forces and the PKK,” call for an end to the violent street protests in Turkey’s southeast, and tell the PKK to “strengthen its ties with the parts of Kurdistan outside Turkish soil.”.......http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/eyes-on-diyarbakir-for-pkk-leader-ocalans-key-kurdish-bid-message.aspx?pageID=238&nID=79977&NewsCatID=338

  9. Attracting and retaining talented immigrants in Europe is essential condition for demographic and economic growth...

The conference highlighted one of the priorities set by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, in the context of migration. This envisages development of a legal migration policy designed to make Europe one of the most popular destinations for migrants, thus addressing the demographic challenges that Europe is likely to face in the future. At the same time, this will be the first event to present preliminary findings from the study “Admitting third-country nationals for business purposes” developed by the European Migration Network. One of the main conclusions of the study is that there is no harmonised policy in the EU towards third-country nationals who enter for business purposes, and the Member States mostly use national programmes, which are adapted to their national priorities.

“Today one of the central aspects of well-managed and comprehensive migration policy in the EU focuses on the development of measures for attracting highly qualified migrants while respecting national competences. Thus, well-managed migration policy can be considered as ways of boosting economic growth and competitiveness, addressing labour market shortages and offsetting the costs of demographic ageing,” indicated Latvian Minister for the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis during the opening of the conference....................https://eu2015.lv/news/media-releases/1034-attracting-and-retaining-talented-immigrants-in-europe-is-essential-condition-for-demographic-and-economic-growth

  10. Iran and six world powers suspended negotiations on a nuclear agreement and were set to meet again next week to break a deadlock over sensitive atomic research and lifting of sanctions, Western officials said today...

While the talks have made progress over the past year, differences on sticking points are still wide enough to potentially prevent an agreement in the end.

France was demanding more stringent restrictions on the Iranians under any deal than the other Western delegations, officials said.

A European negotiator said the six power group - the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China - was generally unified but voiced concern that the Obama administration was under pressure due to concerns Republican-led Congress might wreck any agreement.

"The great paradox is that Congress and Israel have put the pressure on the Americans instead of pressuring Iran which is what we need to be doing," the official said..........http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/184831/deadlocked-iran-nuclear-talks-break-off-to-resume-next-week

  13. Kurds rally in Turkey as militant leader expected to urge progress on peace...

(Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Kurds gathered in southeastern Turkey on Saturday to hear a message from jailed militant leader Abdullah Ocalan, expected to reaffirm his commitment to a peace process despite a war of words with Ankara.

President Tayyip Erdogan, then prime minister, launched talks with Ocalan in late 2012 to end a three-decade insurgency that has killed 40,000 people, ravaged the region's economy and tarnished Turkey's image abroad. Progress has been faltering since then, but Kurdish faith in Ocalan remains undiminished.

Young men in green guerrilla outfits and women in brightly colored dresses danced as patriotic Kurdish songs played over a sound system at the Kurdish "Newroz" New Year celebrations in Diyarbakir, the largest city in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Large screens each side of a stage showed Ocalan's face while many in the crowd waved the flags of his Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group, deemed a terrorist organisation by Ankara, the United States and the European Union.

"We're celebrating now but we've suffered thousands of martyrs, massacres, mystery killings, destroyed villages," said Ekrem Baran, 50, among the crowd..................http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/21/us-turkey-kurds-idUSKBN0MH0AA20150321?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  14. A number of Georgian bureaucrats have key roles in Ukraine supporting President Petro Poroshenko against Russia while Georgian fighters have also been participating in clashes against pro-Russian rebels in the eastern part of the country....

The most widely known Georgian politician in Kiev is Mikheil Saakashvili, former president of Georgia, who is now the chairman of Ukrainian president's International Advisory Council on Reforms.

Saakashvili was the Georgian president during the Russo-Georgian War, which took place in August 2008, following worsening of relations between the two countries. Having left Georgia soon after the country elected its new president in November 2013, Saakashvili works today for the current Ukrainian government together with other former Georgian officials. Among them are Ukraine's Health Minister Aleksandre Kvitashvili, First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Eka Zguladze, Deputy Minister of Justice Gia Getsadze, as well as Deputy General Prosecutor of Ukraine Davit Sakvarelidze and Economy Advisor to Ukrainian President Levan Varshalomidze.

They are now -- except Saakashvili -- Ukrainian citizens, having had to leave their Georgian citizenship due to the lack of legal ground for dual nationality. With the other Georgian officials in local governments, they are all representing Georgia in Ukraine in some way, Saakashvili said, speaking to The Anadolu Agency in Kiev.

Accusing Russia of trying to re-establish the Soviet Union, Saakashvili said the destinies of Ukraine and Georgia depend on each other more than ever before.

  16. Nazi Extortion: Study Sheds New Light on Forced Greek Loans...

Loukas Zisis, the deputy mayor of Distomo, a village nestled in the hills about a two hour drive from Athens, says he thinks about the Germans every day. On June 10, 1944, the Germans massacred 218 people in Distomo, including dozens of children. Zisis, who is just 48 years old, wasn't yet born at the time of the attack.

"We can't forget the Germans," Zisis says. They came to Distomo 71 years ago with their guns. "Today they are exerting power over our village with their banks and policies," he adds. He's standing in the wind on a rocky ledge, a small man in a leather jacket, and looking out over the town. Two-thousand people live here.

The massacre, which continues to shape the place today, was one of the most brutal crimes committed by the Nazis in Greece, with the carnage lasting several hours. For decades, a trial over the massacre wound its way through the courts at all levels in Greece and Germany. Greece's highest court, the Areopag, ruled in 2000 that Germany must pay damages to Distomo's bereaved.

"But we are still waiting," says Zisis. "There has been no compensation."................http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/greek-study-provides-evidence-of-forced-loans-to-nazis-a-1024762.html

The comments were the first time Widodo, who took office in October, has taken a position on the South China Sea dispute.

The English version of the interview was published by Yomiuri on Monday in advance of Widodo's visits to Japan and China this week,

Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia, has been a self-appointed broker in the many territorial disputes between its neighbours and China over the South China Sea.

Widodo is scheduled to hold talks with Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, on Monday.

Widodo confirmed that he and Abe would sign a defence cooperation agreement that would cover "how to work with" Japan's military, and "search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance, and cyber defence",Yomiuri reported.

Les milieux d'affaires chinois continuent à racheter des entreprises européennes. 101. Syrian military source alleges Turkish role in Idlib offensive...

(Reuters) - A Syrian military source accused Turkey on Monday of helping Islamist rebels to stage an assault on Idlib, a provincial capital which fighters seized at the weekend.

The source declined to comment on the situation in Idlib, citing security considerations, but a monitoring group has confirmed the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and allies now control Idlib and said the Syrian air force bombed the city on Monday.

The fall of Idlib, 30 km (20 miles) from the Turkish border, marks only the second time in the Syrian civil war that Damascus has lost control of a provincial capital. Iran would not necessarily have to ship its stockpile of highly enriched uranium abroad under a nuclear pact with major powers, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Monday.

"You don't have to ship it out of the country to get to a year breakout time," she said in a conference call, referring to the goal of stretching the amount of time it would take Iran to acquire enough fissile material to make one atomic bomb.

  106. Japan extends unilateral sanctions against DPRK ...

Japan on Tuesday approved a two- year extension of its unilateral sanctions imposed against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a local report said.

The decision showed that Japan sees no tangible progress in the DPRK's investigation into the abduction of Japanese nationals in the 1970s and 1980s, said Japan's Kyodo News.

The sanctions, which will be expired on April 13, included a ban on the entry into Japanese ports of DPRK-registered ships except for humanitarian purposes, and on chartered flights between the two countries.

Japan partially lifted its sanctions last July as the DPRK launched a new round of investigations into the whereabouts of the Japanese abductees.

The abduction issue prevents the two countries from forming diplomatic ties.
