Russia, Cyprus renew defense agreement on use of military facilities

Russia and Cyprus renewed a defense cooperation agreement during an official visit by President Nicos Anastasiades to Moscow, a statement issued in Nicosia said on Wednesday.

The statement said the Cyprus will allow Russian warships to anchor in Cypriot ports and use Cypriot military facilities.

However, the statement did not mention letting Russia land military aircraft at an air base or use storage facilities which Russian Ambassador to Cyprus, Stanislav Osadchiy, had said Moscow had requested from Cyprus.

Cyprus had initially said it would offer Russia the same access to facilities offered to other countries, such as France, which has been given landing rights for its military aircraft at Paphos air base and Germany, which uses port facilities at Cypriot ports.

  1. Cyprus is against the European Union imposing sanctions on Russia over events in Ukraine, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday...

"It is impossible to achieve a positive result by military means or through sanctions," Anastasiades told a TASS news conference. "Issues should be resolved exclusively through diplomatic channels and dialogue, while respecting the territorial integrity."

"We do not come into conflict with the European Union. Each EU member state has the right to express its opinion freely. It is not forbidden," he said. "Cyprus is against sanctions on Russia. And we are not the only ones among European countries who have taken such a stance. There is a whole group of other states opposing the sanctions."

"It is necessary to respect the rights of citizens in any country," the Cypriot leader said, noting the importance of internal dialogue in Ukraine to prevent a civil war there.

  2. Russian warships allowed at ports of Cyprus for humanitarian purposes — president...

Cyprus’ permission for Russian warships to call at the ports of the Mediterranean country was issued as an extension to a previously concluded agreement and not the new one, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday.

The addition to the previous agreement stipulates a legal right for the Russian warships to call at the ports of Cyprus with humanitarian aims.

"The renewed agreement stipulates the right for the Russian warships to call at the Cypriot ports," Anastasiades said addressing news conference at TASS. "This right stipulates their calls with humanitarian aims, which are supplies of provision and refueling of vessels, as well as for rescue of lives of Russian nationals and their evacuation from neighboring countries."

Anastasiades said that during negotiations on this "sensitive issue" Russian President Vladimir Putin was "very delicate."................http://tass.ru/en/russia/779803
