'Rebuilding Gaza could take a century if Israel keeps blockade'

The rebuilding of homes, schools and hospitals in Gaza could take more than a century to complete unless an Israeli blockade restricting imports of construction materials into the Gaza Strip is lifted, aid agency Oxfam said on Thursday.
Gaza needs more than 800,000 truckloads of building materials to repair infrastructure damaged in the 2014 war with Israel, yet less than a quarter of one percent of the materials needed have entered Gaza in the last three months, Oxfam said.

Fifty days of conflict in Gaza between Hamas and Israeli forces in July and August last year killed more than 2,100 Palestinians and 73 Israelis, and left swathes of ruins in the Mediterranean enclave of 1.8 million Palestinians.

Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip after the Islamist movement Hamas won power there in elections in 2006, and both Egypt and Israel maintain tight controls on the movement of goods and people in and out of the territory.

  1. Palestine FM says there are no partners in Israel’s government to hold talks with....

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki said on Thursday negotiations with Israel were not possible until the country had abandoned its anti-Palestinian rhetoric.

"We are not in talks with Israel now. We are looking for a fair solution to the problem of the Palestinian people," Malki told a news conference, noting that "no talks are possible" so long as statements were being made like the one by the Israeli foreign minister saying that Palestinian President "Mahmoud Abbas is a terrorist, though a diplomat".

Palestine was unable to find partners in the Israeli government to hold negotiations, Malki said.

"It seems sufficient to listen to what the international community says and how it assesses the position of the Israeli government in recent years," he said. "Let the international community judge. If we found a real negotiating partner in Israel, the process would be much easier."

"But Israel is not willing to drop its settlement policy," Malki said. "This means that the Israeli government has no intention to go down the path of peace. It wants to follow the path of occupation, which helps to control the Palestinian economy and possess a huge market.".......................http://tass.ru/en/world/779877
