Tibetans shot trying to reclaim self-immolator’s body (At least 135 Tibetans have set themselves on fire)

DHARAMSHALA: Two Tibetans were shot and several others injured after Chinese police opened fire on a group of Tibetans trying to reclaim the body of Ven. Kelsang Yeshi who set himself on fire on 23 December, media reports say.

Ven. Kalsang Yeshe, 32, burned himself on Tuesday outside the Tawu Nyatso monastery in Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (incorporated into China’s Sichuan Province) in the third self-immolation protest against the Chinese government in less than a month.

Police fired warning shots to disperse a crowd that had gathered to protect Kalsang Yeshe from authorities as the monk was engulfed in flames, wounding two Tibetans, a former resident of Tawu county named Tawu Tenzin told a Tibetan radio service.
Media reports also quoted a Tibetan source from the region as saying “the police forcefully cremated the body of Kalsang Yeshi, who died minutes after setting himself on fire on Tuesday, in an electric crematorium.”

“Two family members of the deceased were forced to throw the remains into a river at gunpoint. And those injured are not willing to go to hospital for fear of being arrested,” said the source.

At least 135 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in protest against the repressive policies of the Chinese government.

The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile yesterday expressed solidarity with the Tibetan self-immolators and urged China to investigate the real causes of the self-immolation protests and address the grievances of the Tibetan people.
