Transdniestria insists on bilateral talks with Moldova

The foreign minister of the unrecognized Republic of Transdniestria, Nina Shtanski, said on Thursday that Transdniestria should continue bilateral talks with Moldova despite a pause in consultations held in an expanded format.
“We are committed to dialogue no matter how complicated it can be. On the contrary, we keep asking our Moldovan colleagues to continue meeting at a bilateral level. We will continue inviting participants in the “5+2” negotiations (Moldova and Transdniestria as the sides in conflict; the OSCE as an intermediary; Russia and Ukraine as guarantor countries and brokers as well as observers from the European Union and the United States) to our meetings,” Shtanski told journalists.

Shtanski noted that negotiations in the expanded format had practically been blocked because of pressure which Chisinau was trying to exert. The “5+2” negotiations have taken place only twice this year. The last round was held in September.

Shtanski spoke about dozens of criminal lawsuits filed by Moldovan law enforcers against Transdniestria’s officials, including Prime Minister Tatyana Turanskaya as well as several ministers and district heads. That, according to Shtanski, is a violation of agreements which were reached in 2012 after a long-lasting break in talks.

“We then agreed that the negotiations should be constructive and should be conducted exclusively when good will is manifested. Many documents adopted in the course of negotiations say it is impossible to resort to sanctions, pressure and blockade,” Shtanski said.
The “5+2” negotiations were interrupted in 2006 when Ukraine banned Transdniestrian goods without Moldova’s accompanying documents from crossing the border at Chisinau’s request. Tiraspol regarded the move as an economic blockade. Thanks to the brokers’ joint efforts, the negotiations resumed in 2012.
