Deputy PM and FM Venizelos’ statement on the margins of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels)

Hellenic MFA, Monday, 17 November 2014:
“It is difficult, but it is a political and historical imperative for the European Union, as a political entity, to shape its own policy, always in cooperation with the U.S., with NATO – within the framework of the UN Security Council’s resolutions – on all the pending issues, which at this time are pressing Europe on all sides, and especially Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean.

So today we talked about all the issues: about the crisis in the east, about Ukraine, and therefore about Russia. We talked about the crisis in the south; mainly the threat posed by ISIS, the so-called Islamic State. We talked about the failure to return to dialogue in the Middle East, about the breakdown of the state entities in Syria, in Libya, and about the threats Lebanon is facing.

Thus, European policy’s common denominator must be the restoration of stability in the region and the emergence of Europe’s special role, which is something that is by no means self-evident and by no means simple.”
