US Reiterates Its Support for Investigating Into Mass Graves Found Near Donetsk

WASHINGTON, October 16  - Washington supports conducting the investigation into the mass graves, found near Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, in September, the spokesperson for the US Department of State said.

"We certainly support an investigation. I don't have any particular update on how that is going," Jen Psaki, spokesperson for the US State Department said during the press briefing on Wednesday.

Late in September, several mass graves with over 400 bodies of civilians and independence supporters, apparently killed execution-style, were found northeast of Donetsk.

Independence supporters of southeastern Ukraine claim that the massacre was carried out by Ukraine's National Guard fighters, who had stayed in the area since April, when Kiev launched its military operation in the region. Ukrainian authorities have denied the accusation.

On Monday, the head of Russia's Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights Mikhail Fedotov has suggested a public investigation into the mass graves could be carried out by a joint Russian-Ukrainian human rights mission.

Earlier in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the chief of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Didier Burkhalter have agreed on the importance of a thorough investigation into the incident.
