Galați on Wednesday, 22 October, during the second day of his trip to
Romania.
In Brăila he was welcomed by the board of the local Greek Community, members of the Greek community, and the Mayor of the city, Mr. Aurel Simionescu.
Together they were taken on a tour of the
Greek Church of the Annunciation and the building that houses the
offices of the Greek Community. Having thanked the Mayor of Brăila for
his presence, Mr. Gerontopoulos noted that “Greece and Romania have
longstanding excellent relations, and the Greek community in Romania
constitutes the bridge and link. Moreover, the countries have always
been on the same side, and now we are together in the European Union. In Brăila he was welcomed by the board of the local Greek Community, members of the Greek community, and the Mayor of the city, Mr. Aurel Simionescu.
Our goal is for the very good cooperation to improve constantly, and an
important role is certainly played in this by the presence of many top
Greek enterprises in Romania.”
Mr. Gerontopoulos also visited the old Greek quarter, the houses where our poet Andreas Embirikos and the composer Iannis Xenakis were born, and the museum of the writer of Greek origin Panait Istrati.
He then visited the city of Galați, where he was welcomed by members of the Greek Romanian community and the city’s Deputy Mayor. In Galați, Mr. Gerontopoulos was shown the Greek Church of the Transfiguration and the offices of the Greek Community, where he was briefed on their activities and the operation of the school, and where he talked with teachers of the Greek language. Shortly before departing from Galați, Mr. Gerontopoulos visited the town cemetery and placed flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is dedicated to the Greek heroes who lost their lives fighting in World War I.
