Russian ambassador says size of EU aid to people in East Ukraine graceless (2.5 million euro)

BRUSSELS, August 31, /ITAR-TASS/. EU statement on allocating humanitarian aid in the amount of 2.5 million euro to the residents of war-torn Eastern Ukraine looks graceless on the background of promises to assist the restoration of Ukraine’s economy Russian ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, said Sunday.
He also indicated that the final communique of the summit, which the EU held Saturday, did not mention the disastrous humanitarian situation in the region.

EU leaders met with Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko prior to the summit’s working session. Also, Poroshenko had talks with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso before the start of the summit.

Barroso told reporters later that the commission had promised an extra aid of 2.5 million euro to the people affected by combat actions in Eastern Ukraine.
  • “The EU is showing the presence of the force of inertia, including its relations with the incumbent government in Kiev,” Chizhov said.
“Upon taking the position of unconditional support for Kiev once, the European Union is unfortunately is unable to switch to a different track and that’s why the final conclusions of the European Council practically doesn’t contain any mentioning of the disastrous humanitarian situation that has taken shape in Eastern Ukraine,” he said
“Even against the backdrop of the trifling sums that have been promised to Poroshenko by way of economic assistance the amount of 2.5 million euro is just unbecoming,” Chizhov said.
