Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office and Security Service have instituted 308 criminal cases against the Communist Party, the UNN news agency said on Thursday citing Chairwoman of the State Register Service Anna Onishchenko.
The communists “are suspected in their support of Crimea’s annexation and the creation of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics,” the prosecutors say.
Deputy Justice Minister Ihor Alexeyev said that “irrefutable evidence” had been provided to the court that proved that “both the supreme leadership of Ukraine’s Communist Party and local leaders committed actions in support of the separatist movement in the eastern regions.”
“The faction embraced 33 lawmakers and when 10 out of them withdrew, there remained too small a number of MPs for the faction to continue functioning,” Rada Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov said.
“We have rectified a historical mistake disbanding the factions and I am hopeful the communist ideology will never be present in our society."
