Netherlands to send unarmed military police to Ukraine. (An international police mission to secure the disaster area)

The Dutch government will on Friday send 40 unarmed Royal Military Police officers to site of the MH17 plane crash in eastern Ukraine, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced.

Military police will leave the country on a C-130 Hercules aircraft from Eindhoven Airport at around 18:00 local time (1600 GMT). Rutte said the team's goal is to help forensic experts in the search for remaining bodies.

The first priority of the Dutch cabinet is to find, transport and identify the bodies, he added.

Two Dutch experts from the National Forensic Investigation Team are on their way back to eastern Ukraine and 21 more will follow in the coming days. They will work together with the international research team in their search for victims and their investigation.

Saying the crash site was "not a safe area," Rutte told a parliamentary debate in the Hague on Friday that the government wants to "increase the amount of our people there to 63."

He added that Dutch military police would have the same job as the other 21 researchers and would not wear military clothing. "They are researchers and will not provoke the local authorities," Rutte said.

  • Together with Australia, the Netherlands is, according to local media, working on a plan for an international police mission to secure the disaster area.

"We're looking for ways to stabilize the area," he stated, without giving further details.

Dutch experts have cancelled plans to head to the site of the downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine, international officials say.

Fighting between pro-Russia separatists and government troops in the area has prevented access to the site, they add.

Earlier, Malaysia said it had struck a deal with the rebels to allow international police at the site..............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28509522
