Statement by NATO Secretary General on the so called elections in South Ossetia, Georgia

"NATO does not recognise the election held on 8 June in the Georgian region of South Ossetia.

This election does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement in of the situation in Georgia. 

NATO Allies do not recognise the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions of Georgia as independent states.

Allied defence ministers on 4 June reiterated their full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders."
