Odessa Residents to File Lawsuit Against Kiev Over May 2 Tragedy

A group of people from Odessa is planning to file a lawsuit against the Ukrainian authorities whom they blame in the May 2 tragedy where dozens were killed during a fire, Ukraine’s UNN agency reported Wednesday.

“The action group of Odessa residents is planning to file a lawsuit to the local administrative court of Kiev against the Ukrainian authorities whom they blame for the May 2 tragedy. Members of the group demand to recognize the authorities’ actions illicit and to launch an immediate probe into the events,” UNN reports.

Dozens of anti-Maidan activists died on May 2 in a fire in Odessa’s House of Trade Unions. At least 48 people died, and over 200 were injured. The interim government in Kiev has been accused by local officials of covering up the actual death toll of at least 116.

Ukrainian investigators discovered traces of chloroform in garbage and ashes removed from the House of Trade Unions.

Pro-Kiev radicals joined by the Right Sector militia blocked the anti-government protesters in the House of Trade Unions and set the building on fire by hurling Molotov cocktails inside. Those trapped inside had little chance of extinguishing the blaze, as fire hoses in the building were out of order. Many jumped to their deaths through windows attempting to escape the inferno, while others were just simply shot.
