Greek main opposition SYRIZA party head Alexis Tsipras expected "change
of authority" on Sunday as Greeks were voting in the first round of
local polls.
"I am certain that today a first but important step will be taken so that municipalities and regions change authority, an important step so that Greece turns page," he said after casting his ballot in central Athens.
Approximately 9.8 million registered voters are asked to choose their new representatives in municipal and regional councils in two rounds.
The second on May 25 coincides with the elections for the European parliament which according to some analysts could decide the fate of the current conservative- led administration.
Although under Greece's Constitution voters choose candidates running under independent electoral lists rather than political parties in the 13 regions and 325 municipalities nationwide, most are openly backed by parties.
Therefore, the outcome is seen as a message for all parties and their handling of the key issue on the agenda; the debt crisis which erupted in 2009.
"Today is the day of voters, not candidates...I am optimistic about the result, because I gave a battle with great people by my side," said Rena Dourou, SYRIZA's candidate for the Governor of Attica.
The race for the post is regarded as a barometer of voters' intentions across Greece in local as well as elections for the European parliament.

- The latest polls showed Dourou running neck and neck and qualifying for the next round with incumbent Governor Yannis Sgouros who has the support of the co-ruling socialist party.
