Ukraine orders military action in the east

Ukraine's acting president has ordered a military operation against pro-Kremlin separatists in the east of the country after the body of a local politician from his own party was found showing signs of torture.

"I demand the resumption of effective counter-terrorism measures to protect Ukrainian citizens in the east from terrorism," Oleksandr Turchynov said on Tuesday, according to a statement from his other office as parliamentary speaker.
Turchinov said that "brutally tortured" bodies had been found near the city of Slaviansk, which is in the hands of pro-Russian militants.

One was that of Volodymyr Rybak, a member of Turchinov's Batkivshchyna party, who had recently been abducted by "terrorists".

"These crimes are being carried out with the full support and indulgence of the Russian Federation," he said.

  • Turchynov's comments came as the United States deployed troops to Poland to begin a series of military exercises in four countries across Eastern Europe.
Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said the exercises would last about a month, and involve roughly 600 troops.
  • About 150 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Vicenza, Italy, will start the exercises on Wednesday in Poland.

Similar exercises will be conducted in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and troops could arrive in those countries by Monday.
The exercises are part of an effort announced last week aimed at reassuring NATO allies of America's commitment to the region's defence......[aljazeera.com]

  1. The US Navy frigate the USS Taylor has passed through the Dardanelles Strait, returning to the Black Sea after repairs and a few days after Nato said that it was increasing its presence on sea, air and land after Russia’s continuing interference in Ukraine....

The Taylor was in the Black Sea area earlier, at the time of the Sochi Olympics in February 2014, when she ran aground in an incident that caused the captain his command.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the United States of violating the Montreux Convention which limits the number of vessels in the Black Sea. Lavrov said that the Taylor had remained in Black Sea waters for more than the 21-day limit allowed by the convention.

Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that his country would not allow the convention to be violated. He said that the Taylor had remained in the area past the time limit because of the accident...............http://sofiaglobe.com/2014/04/22/us-navy-frigate-returns-to-the-black-sea/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=us-navy-frigate-returns-to-the-black-sea

  4. Ukrainian troops on Thursday launched an assault on the eastern rebel stronghold of Slaviansk, taking control of a checkpoint north of the city and prompting rebels to evacuate civilians from the occupied city hall and take up defensive positions....

According to an AFP journalist, gunfire was heard after at least five Ukrainian armoured personnel carriers had driven past an abandoned rebel roadblock to take up position at the entry to the town.

A spokeswoman for the separatists, Stella Khorocheva, told AFP that all civilians had been ordered out of the insurgent-held town hall.

"The armed men handling the defence of the town hall will remain," she said.

Kiev claimed it had also inflicted stinging defeats on pro-Kremlin rebels in other parts of east Ukraine on Thursday, retaking control of the town hall in the southeastern port city of Mariupol and repelling an attack by heavily-armed militants at an army base in the eastern town of Artemivsk.

They were the first military successes announced by Ukraine's Western-backed government since pro-Russian militants seized control of a string of towns in the country's southeast over the past several weeks.
